Featured Artists
Carole Kleinberg, Amanda Schlachter and Jeff Kin

In this issue we decided to
recognize three people at once as our Featured Artist.
These talented actor/directors are an ever-present force
of nature on the local theater scene. They have joined
forces to direct the upcoming production of
Sarasota Actors Workshop’s third season, this year
at the
Backlot, October 6 through 15. Jeff can be seen
regularly on stages throughout the area and has written
and directed some of the most memorable work to come our
way in years. Carol is the former Education Director for
the Asolo Theatre Company. Amanda is a graduate of the
American Academy of Dramatic Arts and holds a BFA in
performance from the University of Central Florida.
Rarely does the talent of three such accomplished people
come together in one place and, as a result, audiences
and actors alike benefit.
Click here to read more complete bios because space
here would not permit. Lest you forget,
order your tickets for Sarasota Actors Workshop today!

September 27
[ funny, funny, ha, ha ]
Becky’s Rejects continue to deliver side-splitting
improv every last Wednesday of the Month at the
Backlot. Next week Zac Chase will perform kamikaze
improv while riding a unicycle backwards, blindfolded, and
playing the lesser know Slavic instrument, the prigdadyl.
The prigdadyl, or prig, is heralded as the precursor to the
mouth harp or kazoo. Originally used in battle as a
communications device, the prig evolved into a musical
instrument as soldiers relaxed by campfires. Ok, I made all
of that stuff about Zac up, but you can see Becky’s Rejects
and have a great time anyway! |

[ ode to fluff ]
That’s right, the marshmallow stuff in a
jar;
FLUFF. Local artist
Vick Vercauteren is one of nine artists to be featured in
what she refers to as “the
world’s goofiest art show.” Both NPR and the Boston Globe
are covering the exhibit and fluff-stuff. Vercauteren, a
graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (University
of the Arts now), has work exhibited in galleries here and
abroad, and will be on exhibit in Berlin in October. Fluff on!

[ learn ]
Learn the principles of drawing and oil painting, no matter
your skill level, at Atelier Miano: Realistic Painting Studies with artist
Charles Miano. The class will begin in October and students will have exclusive
working access to the Ringling Museum.
Click here and look under oil painting for more information. Also, I learned
a new word!
Atelier is evidently the French word for an artist’s studio. Go figure. |

[ note from rick ]
As many of you know, Peg and I went to Maine in August,
where I attended the
Maine Workshops 4 Week Documentary Filmmaking Class. It was an intensive 12
hour per day, 6 day per week schedule and I learned lighting, sound, camera and
editing. I produced a short and a documentary in that time and also worked as
crew on projects by other students. Jean Nagy is a new friend, and classmate,
and her 4 minute film is one that I worked on and that I think you will all
enjoy.
Click here and enjoy a short film. Photo by Peg Hughes. |
