Denny Arant

Art Center Sarasota features a Retrospective of Work by the late Nokomis artist, Denny Arant from September 12 through October 14. Arant was a trained artist and art educator. His works hang in many private collections and museums like the Chicago Art Institute and the Smithsonian Institution. Among his many achievements, Arant was selected to represent the U. S. at the International Malerwochem in Vienna, Austria in 1981. A master of many mediums, Arant was the first artist to use acrylics on plastic sheeting. Sarasota Actors Workshop is pleased to announce that rehearsals are underway for SAW’s third season. The cast of 31 of Sarasota’s best actors will present an evening of fascinating one-act plays by local playwrights. This year’s cast includes Jay Handelman, the Sarasota Herald Tribune columnist and arts critic, and Sarasota City Manager Mike McNees and many veterans of local and national stages. Meet Veronica Tart, tomorrow from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, at everything but the girl, a unique boutique & gallery, located at 430 Central Avenue, in Sarasota's historic Rosemary District. Veronica Tart is a group of creative, independent business women who invite you to come and network with them and others at a "Second Friday" evening event at everything but the girl, and enjoy a chance to meet like-minded women who support local, independent businesses and each other. You'll find these "Tarts" are involved in many of the businesses, projects and programs that are on the cutting edge of Sarasota's indie movement. Cliff Roles welcomes Susan Rife during his show on AM1220 this Friday at 2 pm. Rife is the Books Editor for the Sarasota Herald Tribune. You can, of course, listen live right here on your computer. Cliff has an amazing line-up of local and national guests on his daily talk radio show. Give an ear!

[ folk music and peace workshop ]

WSLR and the Flanzer JCC present the Grammy nominated folk musician John McCutcheon at 8:15 pm. McCutcheon has been compared to Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor and is the master of twenty-four instruments. The musical comedy of Allan Sherman comes to life in “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” at the Venice Little Theatre. Follow the life of invented character Barry Bookman from birth to early retirement as guided by Sherman’s immediately recognized lyrics.

[ country meets rock ]

Billi & Patti hit the stage at the Metro Café with their unique acoustic music with hard rock influences and twangy vocals of country. What a mix! Audiences have been raving.

September 13
[ playwright on hand ]

Jack Gilhooley will present a book signing at the Metro Café from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Gihooley, a local playwright, has three plays being published by Broadway play Publishing, Inc. and will discuss the book and upcoming productions. After opening in NYC later this month, The Warrior will come to Sarasota’s Backlot in November. The one-woman play, starring Zan Aufderheide, tells the story of “Tammy”, a two-tour Iraq vet with PTSD and a broken marriage. Check back for details next month.

Trust the Man is a smart, sophisticated comedy about the challenges of love and marriage among modern day New Yorkers. The story follows a successful actress (Julianne Moore), her stay-at-home husband (David Duchovny), her slacker younger brother (Billy Crudup), and his aspiring novelist girlfriend (Maggie Gyllenhaal) on their search for love in the midst of careers, family, infidelity and the ever-daunting search for Manhattan street parking. [ structures extraordinaire ]

The artwork of Betty Fairbank Griggs is on exhibit in Harmony Gallery at the Symphony Center. Betty has amazing talent and was anythingarts.com’s first Featured Artist last year. Her watercolors are phenomenal and depict many of the places Betty has traveled around the world. The exhibit is free and a portion of all sales will benefit the Florida West Coast Symphony.

September 14 - 17
[ cancer stinks ]

The eclectic theatre company (etc) is presenting sixty plays in an hour and the all of the proceeds benefit the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Contact the Backlot for tickets and information at 941-363-9300.

September 16
[ give peace a dance ]

Sarasota Earthdance returns for a day-long dance/music party for world peace that will be simultaneously linked with 250 cities in 50 countries by the internet. Live music and dj’s fill the air from 3:00 pm to 2:00 am. Check out Earthdance here. Live at the Powell Crosley Museum.

[ opening reception ]

Art Center Manatee invites the public to attend an opening reception for two new exhibits. “Hot Stuff” is in the Reid Hodges Gallery showing work from the Pottery Group. In the Kellogg and Searle Galleries enjoy the work of the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society. The exhibits run through October 13. Also, many classes are about to begin at the center, check the web for listings.

Georgie Anne Geyer has interviewed Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Sadat, Saddam Hussein, the Ayatollah Khomeini and big and little George Bush. Wow! The foreign correspondent and syndicated columnist will be on hand to discuss “Castro, What Comes Next?” at the Players Theatre. Call 941-349-8350 for tickets and information.

The Peter Paul Gallery is hosting an exhibit of invited local artists with emphasis on assemblage, painting and text. Those on hand include Barry Freedland, Tony Rice, Jill Hoffman-Kowal, Kevin Dean, Gwendolyn Fryer, Dennis Kowal, Peter Koenig and Peter Paul. The gallery is located on the second floor of the Mira Mar plaza on Palm Avenue. Stop in and enjoy something a bit different for a change.

The Sarasota Reading Festival is gearing up for its ninth annual free, daylong celebration of the joys of reading, to be held from 9:30 - 4:30 Saturday, November 4 at Five Points Park in downtown Sarasota. More than 100 author readings and seminars, children’s events and performances are planned for this bigger-and-better-than-ever reading festival. In the past couple of years, Sarasota has seen many new theater groups and arts organizations crop up. One of the toughest things for small or fledgling groups to handle is efficient ticket sales that offer credit card sales via a secure internet connection. Viola, SRQ Box Office to the rescue! [ seniors got it goin’ on ]  

Sarasota Senior Theater presents a reader’s theater every-other-Tuesday at the Backlot. The next presentation is on September 19. Also, SST has a new Dance Movement class every Wednesday at the Senior Friendship Center. The class is open to all seniors and is taught by Eric Berkel, formerly a performer with Siegfried and Roy in Vegas for ten years. And just in case you thought these seniors are relaxing and resting on their laurels, forget it! They also have an active speaker’s bureau. Darren Frazier announces the call for nominations for an exciting new project. Deaf People of Distinction in Today’s American Workforce  is a photojournalism project that will result in a book of images and self-descriptive prose, as well as gallery exhibitions. Laughing Fish Artworks located in Bradenton's Village of the Arts is now accepting artist entries for the First Annual Noche de los Meurtos (Night of the Dead) Art Exhibition, a juried show which will be on exhibit at the Laughing Fish Artworks gallery October 1 – 31.  Designed to celebrate Manasota's rich Hispanic heritage and to increase cultural awareness, submitted entries should reflect the thematic and/or cultural components of this traditional Mexican holiday.  One cash prize of $150 will be awarded for Best of Show.
