Denny Arant

Art Center Sarasota
features a Retrospective of Work by the late Nokomis
artist,
Denny Arant from September 12 through October 14. Arant was a trained artist and art educator. His works
hang in many private collections and museums like the
Chicago Art Institute and the Smithsonian Institution.
Among his many achievements, Arant was selected to
represent the U. S. at the International Malerwochem in
Vienna, Austria in 1981. A master of many mediums, Arant
was the first artist to use acrylics on plastic
sheeting. Enjoy this exhibit and celebrate the life and
art of Denny Arant.

Sarasota Actors Workshop
is pleased to announce that rehearsals are underway for SAW’s third season. The
cast of 31 of Sarasota’s best actors will present an evening of fascinating
one-act plays by local playwrights. This year’s cast includes
Jay Handelman, the
Sarasota Herald Tribune columnist and arts critic, and
Sarasota City Manager Mike McNees and many veterans of local and national
stages. SAW’s first two seasons sold out in advance so you are encouraged to

WSLR

Flanzer JCC present the Grammy nominated folk musician
John McCutcheon at 8:15 pm. McCutcheon has been compared to Will Rogers and
Garrison Keillor and is the master of twenty-four instruments. John will also
lead a free Workshop for Nonviolent Conflict Resolution at the JCC at 3:30 pm.

September 13 [ playwright on hand ]
Jack Gilhooley
will present a book signing at the
Metro Café from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Gihooley, a local playwright, has three plays being
published by Broadway play Publishing, Inc. and will discuss the book and
upcoming productions. After opening in NYC later this month, The Warrior will
come to Sarasota’s
Backlot in November. The one-woman play, starring
Zan Aufderheide, tells the story of “Tammy”, a two-tour Iraq vet with PTSD
and a broken marriage. Check back for details next month. |

The artwork of
Betty Fairbank Griggs is on exhibit in
Harmony Gallery at the Symphony Center. Betty has amazing talent and was
anythingarts.com’s first Featured Artist last year. Her watercolors are
phenomenal and depict many of the places Betty has traveled around the world.
The exhibit is free and a portion of all sales will benefit the
Florida West Coast Symphony. |

Art Center Manatee invites the public to attend an
opening reception for two new exhibits. “Hot Stuff” is in
the Reid Hodges Gallery showing work from the Pottery Group.

up for its ninth annual free, daylong celebration of the joys of reading, to be

Sarasota Senior Theater presents a reader’s theater every-other-Tuesday at
the
Backlot. The next presentation is on September 19. Also, SST has a new Dance
Movement class every Wednesday at the Senior Friendship Center. The class is
open to all seniors and is taught by Eric Berkel, formerly a performer with
Siegfried and Roy in Vegas for ten years. And just in case you thought these
seniors are relaxing and resting on their laurels, forget it! They also have an

Frazier announces the call for nominations for an exciting new project. Deaf
People of Distinction in Today’s American Workforce is a photojournalism
project that will result in a book of images and self-descriptive prose, as well
as gallery exhibitions. The project will highlight the accomplishments of one
hundred unique deaf individuals who embody the essence of leadership, social

Village of the Arts is now accepting artist entries for the First Annual
Noche de los Meurtos (Night of the Dead) Art Exhibition, a juried show which
will be on exhibit at the Laughing Fish Artworks gallery October 1 – 31.
Designed to celebrate Manasota's rich Hispanic heritage and to increase cultural
awareness, submitted entries should reflect the thematic and/or cultural
