on ]
Talented
seventeen-year-old actress, Danica Dean will bring to life the writings and life
of Emily Dickinson in the Tony Award-Winning play, The Belle of Amherst written
by William Luce. Performances will run Friday, August 25 at 8:00 pm and
Saturday, August 26 at 2:00 and 8:00 at The
Backlot Theater, 2208 Industrial Blvd. Sarasota. Tickets are $10 per person
and half price for students high school age and under. Tickets are available by

The Manatee Players will
kick off their 2006-07 season with a musical revue, REVIEW! REVUE!

exhibition ]
Art in Revolution: Russian
Constructivism from the Collection of Howard Schickler
exhibition. Gallery I: Part two of the exhibition of
Arnold Mesches’ famed FBI Series will feature the
large-scale paintings that accompany the small illuminated
manuscripts based on his extensive FBI files shown last
year. Paintings from Mesches' most recent series, Coming
Attractions, will also be on display. Gallery II:
Russian Constructivist photographs, graphic & book design,
and paintings on paper from the collection of Howard
Schickler. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

September 1 - 30 [ another good reason to live in florida ]
Florida residents receive 2 for 1 regular priced adult admission to the
Ringling Museum during the month of September. Be sure to bring your proof
of residency…those docents are tough! For more information, check out
Ringling.org. Also, the museum will premiere the film The Life and Times of John
& Mable Ringling for public viewing in the
Historic Asolo Theater, Aug. 28, 2006. The 30-minute film produced by WEDU

uniquely American, rags-to-riches story of John and Mable Ringling. |

October 27 and 28 [ it's not as morbid as it sounds ]
Theatre Odyssey has announced plans for a production to be held at Art Center
Sarasota on October 27 and 28, coinciding with the Center’s Dia de los Muertos
(or Day of the Dead) exhibition. The event will incorporate multiple works from
local performers, artists and writers. Writers wishing to have plays considered
can submit manuscripts to 5370 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Suite 109, Longboat Key,
34228. Artists can also
submit ideas via email. “The Day of the Dead” will be performed at 8pm at
Art Center Sarasota. Tickets are $15.00. For more information, call

Girls Incorporated. Literally.
Girls Inc. and
Junior Achievement teamed up to help teenage members of Girls Inc. Sarasota
County create their own corporation, Funky Fashions. The girls were coached by
local businesswomen Barbara Somma of Defining Destiny, Brooke Cherry of Busy B
Concierge and Jasmine Vaughan of Jazsy’s Jewelry. The teens learned business
basics and worked to hold a successful afternoon sale, with clothes donated by
Kelly’s Closet. The teens also worked with Jasmine to create unique beaded
bracelets, which are currently on sale for $8 a piece at
everything but the girl, 430 Central Avenue. All proceeds benefit

You may remember that Jenna
Norwood was one of our featured artists this year and her film, "Supercharge
Me" has officially been selected for the 9th Annual Tofino Film Festival in
British Columbia. The trailer for "Supercharge
Me" premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival in April 2006. They began
shooting the film in April 2005 and have entered into the final stages of
editing. Their mission is to produce an entertaining and educational film that
engages and inspires our audience. |

[ play reading sessions ]
Sarasota Senior Theater
(SST), a non-profit group of seniors 55 and older, has a regular Play Reading
sessions every other Tuesday at The Backlot
at 2:30 pm. The September Play Readings are September 5 and 19. Not only do
participants learn about theater, they test their skills, have fun and meet new

Village of the Arts is now accepting artist entries for the First Annual
Noche de los Meurtos (Night of the Dead) Art Exhibition, a juried show which
will be on exhibit at the Laughing Fish Artworks gallery October 1 – 31.
Designed to celebrate Manasota's rich Hispanic heritage and to increase cultural
awareness, submitted entries should reflect the thematic and/or cultural
components of this traditional Mexican holiday. One cash prize of $150 will be

Theatre Odyssey will hold auditions for “A Celebration of All Souls,” an
evening of plays, poetry, dance, and music at Art Center Sarasota from 5:00
to 8:00 pm on Sunday,
August 27. “A Celebration of All Souls” will be directed by Jack Eddleman, a
veteran of multiple Broadway productions as well as a popular local actor
and director. The event takes place at 8:00 pm on October 27 and 28. The auditions are
open regarding age and gender. The plays that will comprise the evening are
currently in the process of being selected. Actors, dancers, and musicians
will all be compensated for this event. Professional attire and preparation
is suggested. Interested performers unable to attend the scheduled auditions
