Graciela
Giles
loves nature and people. Graciela loves art and music.
Graciela has created a life that combines all of her loves
and the result is a marvel for the senses. Her work has been
exhibited in the US, Canada, Jamaica and Argentina. The art
and music worlds combined when she and Rena Tatem created
“Painting Music/Playing Art” workshops. In addition to
her own creations, Graciela teaches painting, piano and
flute and has a gallery in the Village
of the Arts in Bradenton.

It’s
Only Murder, if you get caught
opens tonight and runs selected weekends through March 17 at the Backlot.
Written by local Alan Cameron Roberts, the play follows “Arnie” and his
twisted pranks as he decides to get rich with a diabolical plan. Starring

February 25 - 26 [ asian cultural festival ]
The
sights, sound and smells of the Orient come to Selby
Gardens , from 10 - 5 daily, this weekend at the Asian
Cultural Festival. The collaboration between Selby Gardens and the Sarasota Ilkebana
International, Sho Fu Bonsai and Sumi-e
Societies includes performances by the Matsuriza
Taiko Drummers, a flower show, painting and martial arts demonstrations and
some delicious Oriental foods. Join Selby Gardens during the event and save on
the annual membership.

Every Sunday [ ski-a-rees ]
If
figure skating is a sport, then what the Ski-a-Rees
do can certainly be called artistic and athletic at once. Since 1957, the
non-profit group has entertained audiences with speed, agility and style. Marvel
at high pyramids, jumps and choreographed agility, all on water skis. The
excitement will thrill you at the Ken
Thompson Park on Sundays throughout the season.

You

25 [ mardi gras parade ]
While
downtown for the farmer’s market this weekend, check out the
Mardi Gras Parade
and Celebration starting at 11:30 at Lemon Ave and First Street. Follow the
Saxes Mardi Gras Brass Band through the streets and enjoy a New Orleans fish fry
at Jazz Plaza at the Miramar on Palm. Cap the night off with dinner and more
exciting music at Saxes until the wee
hours.

Some
of the best movies in recent years have been digital
animation films and the experts are taught right in Sarasota
at the Ringling School of Art
and Design. Seniors from RSAD are hosting a panel
discussion on the art and science of digital animation at
4:30 at Art
Center Sarasota. The lively discussion will enhance your
enjoyment of the current exhibits.

March and April [ fossils and art ]
Through
March 4 you are invited to the Katharine
Butler Gallery to see the works of Charlie Barmonde and his “Fossils.”
The original collection of pottery evokes forms from sea-beds and caves. Then,

Aaron
Board
is a New York Academy of Art
graduate and former visiting faculty member at the Ringling School of Art &
Design. Board’s large scale oil on canvas combines vivid technique with
varying content that is sure to
engage the viewer and discussion naturally follows. Catch Board’s exhibit at Metamorphosis
and don’t miss the opening on March 3 from 6 - 9.

A
humorous struggle between old and new worlds ensues as Izzy lets Bubbie Ida set
her up with a matchmaker that leads to Sam the pickle man. That’s Crossing
Delancey at the Flanzer
JCC. The comedy stars Matt Orr, Sandra Musicante, David Zietz, Peg McGinnis
and Katya Kudrova. Carole Kleinberg, recently retired from the Asolo, directs

March 3 [ free piano concert ]
Concert
pianist Charles “Corky” Chocallo presents a free evening of Chopin,
Scarlatti and Rachmaninoff at Holley

March 3 & 4 [ through women’s
eyes film festival ]
The
lineup of films for the Through
Women’s Eyes Film Festival , a UNIFEM
project, is quite impressive and intriguing. Some of the
films grapple with heart wrenching issues faced by women
throughout the world and then others make you laugh with
comedy. The fest is two days only at the Hollywood 20 and a special
preview at
the Backlot on
February 26 at 1 pm. The preview event includes discussion
with festival Artistic Director Diane Mason and the process
involved in selecting from the many films submitted. Local
artist, Cynthia McMullen, has donated 6 works of art for a
silent auction also to be held that day.

Say
it like Ted Kennedy. It’s more fun. The Sixth Annual Art in
the Park exhibit returns to University
Park Country Club from 10 - 5 each day. Art in the Park is a
juried art show and sale featuring the artwork of residents and members of
the University Park Country Club. And the public is invited!

Ringling School of Art and Design
presents its annual student scholarship fundraiser on March 25. An
Evening at the Avant-Garde: La Vie Montmartre is truly a spectacle to
behold. Wine and dine under the stars in a setting where the cafes and
courtyards of the famed
Parisian artists colony come to vie. Costumes are encouraged and only
enhance the evening. This popular event sells quickly so we are giving ample
notice to our readers.

Second Annual Members Show and Sale of the Creative Arts Association of
Lakewood Ranch is bringing the works of 25 artists together for your pleasure.
Enjoy painting, sculpture, jewelry and more from 10-4 at the Lakewood Ranch Town
Hall.
March 15 – April 15 [ rushing for things
russian ] The
months of March and April will bring many exciting exhibits, workshops and
lectures about Russia and Russian art to Sarasota. Plan ahead now by visiting

[ call for artists ] TideWell
Hospice and Palliative Care
is presenting Clowning
Around Town and artists are sought to create the 70 - 100 clowns
that will be placed throughout Sarasota beginning in October. The
clowns will later be auctioned to benefit the creation of the
Children’s Services Program for children with life-limiting
illnesses, and their families. Selected artists will receive a
$1,500 honorarium in addition to having their work seen by
thousands. Be sure to catch Marge Maisto, President and CEO of
Hospice, on Talk of the Sun
Coast AM 1220, with Cliff Roles, Monday the 27 at 2 pm.
