Welcome to anything arts, a free electronic newsletter, by artists for
artists, distributed by email every two weeks to promote everything from the
funky avant garde to high brow mainstream art.
[ reader survey ]
We asked you “what is art?” in our last issue. Some of the many replies are
listed below. Thank you to all of our readers and to those who took the time to
answer. In the next issue we will resume our “featured artist” spot and ask you
to submit nominations for consideration.
“art to me is anything that is created to be shared. it's not important that
the viewer has the same feelings or "gets" the message of the piece...they just
have to be influenced by it in some small way. Hence, it's perfectly okay, that
with anything artistic, that one man's masterpiece is another man's piece of
crap! most sincerely” - Jeffery Kin
"Oscar Wilde states, 'We can forgive a man for creating something useless as
long as he admires it intensely, all art is quite useless.' That quote drove me
inward since discovering it a couple of years ago. I have since been determined
to define art for myself. It has not been easy, but I believe that art surrounds
us. My father, a lifetime carpenter, used to ask me how I became an artist, no
one else in our family can do what I do. I looked at him with astonishment and
said, "You're an artist that creates sculptures that are grand and huge in
scale, you create art that people live in." In the Orient, in some traditional
sects, most people consider everything thing they do as an art. Daily chores
such as sweeping or cleaning must be done with the exactness and intensity as a
master craftsman. That tells us that anything done with intention, care and
deliberation, can be considered art. I also believe, with these three things,
comes a soul level connection to your work. If you have proper intent, act
deliberately and with great care in your work, you create art. My two cents
anyway”
“Debating the merits of art is endless. However, you can see by the drivel
shelled out at curb sides, Wal-Mart, mall poster stores, etc., that art is not
necessarily innate and sometimes taste really must be taught. Which is sad
because art and music programs have been cut so drastically in the school
system. So how is a child to learn growing up in a house full of "artsy crap"
that there is such a thing as fine art? All I know is, I know bad art when I see
it and this town sure has a hankerin' for it. The only good show I've seen
recently was Sabrina Smalls at Metamorphosis. Amen”. - Adrien Lucas, Tuff Betty
Bags
“You know it is art if it makes you wish that you had done it”. - Curt
“Art is a process. Art is an experience...a collection...a collaboration. Art
is personal.” - Amy Knapp
“Art is that which is appreciated for its uniqueness, integrity and ability
to affect the senses and emotions; its effect is individual yet universal”.
Anonymous (editors note: Anonymous is perhaps the most prolific and oft quoted
writer and philosopher in word history. His or her work, transcends every genre,
culture, religion, political affiliation and language. The name is immediately
recognizable and yet nothing is known of Anonymous’ origin, education or
background. In fact, it must be considered that Anonymous is thousands of years
old, perhaps an alien, as his influence has spanned the ages. Thank you
Anonymous for your tenacity.)
