Now Playing
[ husband and husband ]

Our Son’s Wedding” is the comedic play about an Italian-American plumber and his wife who show up for their son’s wedding only to find that there is no bride; but a second husband. Florida Studio Theatre 941-366-9000.

Through August 7
[ back to the future ]

Talk about déjà vu, The Golden Apple Dinner Theater is presenting its 319th production with “Stop the World I want to get OFF”. It was also their first production, 318 shows (and 40 years!) ago. The Tony Award-winning musical features hit songs like “What Kind of Fool Am I," “Once in a Lifetime” and “Gonna Build a Mountain.” Starring Steve Dawson and Kyle Ennis Turoff, it is simply good summer fun. Call 941-366-5454.
Through August 7
[ playorgami ]

The Banyan Theater presents “Animals Out of Pape," a powerful play that uses the Japanese art of origami as a metaphor. Origami artist Ilana Andrews has “folders block” after losing her inspiration, her husband left her and the 3-legged dog ran away. Nominated for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play of 2009. There are only 17 performances, so plan now to attend. Call 941-351-2808.

July 22 – 24
[ daunted ]

The Players Theatre presents “Undaunted," which begs the question: can you be daunted? Anyway, the play is about the life of Alexander Hamilton and the way his family deals with the public disclosure of his scandalous affair with a troubled young woman. Written by Bernie Yanelli, 2010 New Play Festival winner. Tickets are available now at The Players Box Office, on-line or by phone at 941-365-2494.

July 22
[ flow ]

What happens when our water supplies are gone, polluted beyond repair or available only at a high price from corporations that are buying up all the rights? “FLOW” sounds like a bright and cheery kind of movie, eh? Actually, though the news is daunting (there, I guess you can be daunted), the film does give solutions and scientific answers to important questions. Catch “FLOW” at The South Florida Museum, from 6-8:00 p.m., as part of its Film Friday SPLASH event. The movie series continues through August 19. Check the website for all the particulars. 941-746-4131.

July 25
[ now read this ]

The final installment in Florida Studio Theatre’s Summer Reading Series is “Brilliance," by Anthony McCarten. During the age of the industrial revolution, Edison is faced with the question; “What is the price of progress?.” The Summer Reading Series production is free and is a “music stand” reading, with little staging. This is a great opportunity to experience the play while in development. Even though there is no cost, seats are limited and reservations are requested at 941-366-9000.

July 25
[ family night ]

McCurdy’s hosts local (or ex-local) comedian Tim Wilkins. Tim draws from his life as a former Marine, personal trainer and father. While billed as family night, and the jokes are clean, they could go over little kid’s heads. This show also has no smoking (we’re ok with that) and no alcohol will be served, but 2 drink minimum still applies (really, that’s not funny). Call 941-925-3869 for info. For those who just can’t get through the night without f-bombs and shots of tequila while gagging on a cig, check the calendar for upcoming shows and consider therapy.

July 28

July 28 – 31
[ does the Pope drink in the woods ]

Rudy is the youngest of the Pazinski family and not so sure he’s up for all the rules and, well, prohibitions that go along with being Catholic. Rudy goes head to head with Sister Clarissa when he announces that he’d just as soon shop around for a religion that is more fun. The play about family, growing up and God, is a production of The Players Sarasota. Tickets are available now at the box office, on-line or by phone at 941-365-2494.
