Brenda Smoak

Brenda Smoak of
Bradenton’s
Alchemy Gallery in the
Village of the Arts
is celebrating National Disability Employment Month in
October by hosting a comprehensive and moving art
exhibit for artists living with disabilities. The grand
opening coincides with the Village’s monthly ArtWalk on
Friday, October 1 from 6-9:30pm. Several of her featured
artists will be at Alchemy to meet the public and
discuss and sign their work.
Smoak was recently honored by being selected as one of
five national VSA Teaching Artist Fellows. VSA is the
International Organization on Arts and Disability and is
an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC. VSA was started by Jean Kennedy Smith in
1974 to create a community where people with
disabilities can learn through, participate in, and
enjoy the arts. After spending a week this summer at the
VSA headquarters in Washington, DC immersing herself in
“all things disabled,” Smoak returned to Florida with a
deep personal commitment to do all she can to assist and
promote artists living with disabilities.
This exhibit involves “a touch of synchronicity,” Smoak
says, “because October is National Disability Employment
Month and the timing is perfect to test the waters to
see who wants to show and sell their artwork.”
Originally she planned to include a few local artists
but decided to put out a call for visual art on social
media sites and was stunned by an overwhelming response.
Artwork is arriving daily from artists throughout
Florida, as well as the East and West coasts. “I hope
the public will come see this artwork; it’s truly
amazing. There’s a 5 foot giraffe sculpture made from
coat hangers, a four foot mermaid that will knock your
socks off, paintings, pastels, clay masks, sconces,
jewelry and so much more. Alchemy is bursting with
beautiful art,” Smoak said. “Disability is a matter of
perception - these are some of the most abled and
talented artists I have met in a very long time.”
The show opener is Friday, October 1st, 6pm – 9pm, at
Alchemy Gallery, 1215 12th Street West, in Bradenton’s
Village of the Arts. The show runs for the entire month
of October and is open on Saturdays from 11am- 4pm and
by appointment. For further information, contact Brenda Smoak, 941-201-7282.
