Daniel Perales

Sarasota photographer
Daniel Perales
developed a love of lens at an early age, watching both
his mother and father utilize cameras in their
respective work. His mom was an elementary school
counselor using darkroom photography and his dad was a
musician and historian, using his camera as a research
tool; photographing churches and historical sites in
Spain. When the young Perales took his First Communion
he also received his first camera, a "110 film that
looked like a miniature old-school telephone. I got the
photography bug traveling back and forth between
Sarasota and Spain," Perales describes in his
subtly-accented English. "They were such different
worlds and I wanted to observe and record them so I
could remember and share."
As a photographer for his high school yearbook, Perales
discovered the power of the camera to go anywhere and be
welcomed, and decided to pursue photography in college
at MCC and USF Tampa, earning a degree in cultural
anthropology and fine arts. He also was thrilled to be
involved with
USF's Graphicstudio,
which brought in famous artists like Rauschenberg, Rosenquiest and Mapplethorpe to collaborate with
professors and students producing limited edition
works. Perales himself was selected to photograph these
greats, documenting their process and resulting artwork.
After college, he "travelled Europe with a backpack and
a camera," eventually landing in Denver, Colorado,
teaching photography and Spanish. Eventually he
contracted with the
Denver Art
Museum and was commissioned to do a
large photographic study of the eastern part of the
state, once again uniting his desire to document and
research with his preferred medium.
"A lot of my work is based on series, surveys and
studies, for example the "Nature
Angels" series. For
me it is not just about one shot but documenting
something. My work is based on reality. I want to record
things as they really are and present them in a
beautiful way. It comes from having a genuine interest
in people and culture, what's natural, genuine and
real," explains the artist.
After completing a masters in photography in Spain,
Perales landed back in Sarasota in 2005, teaching
photography at Booker High School, doing freelance work
and starting a family. He and his wife Jeannie Perales
Hendrick, assistant curator of education at the Ringling
Museum, started a series of trips to tour artist
workshops in Castilla, Spain. He also began to
collaborate with seasoned area photographer
Herb Booth and again gained great
experience "learning the language of contemporary
commercial photography and artistic style, from a great
guy."
His continued interest in fine art kept him connected to
the community and attending gallery openings and events,
and in 2009 the brand new artist collaborative
S/ART/Q invited him to be a part of the
group. Perales jumped at the chance, explaining that "in
this society we receive so much information from the TV
and the internet, that people don't have time to really
interact and form diverse opinions. S/ART/Q strives to
get art into the community to people of various ages but
to do it in a fun, attractive setting. To be a source
not only for entertainment, but introspection and
reflection about what's going on in the community and the
world. I think it's a powerful thing for Sarasota as we
are known for the arts but S/ART/Q provides
opportunities to interact at times in non-academic and
informal way."
The group's upcoming
Print Party
is just such an opportunity, with all ten of the S/ART/Q
artists creating an original design which attendees may
choose their favorite to have printed by the artists on
brought clothing items. Perales thinks the Print Party
is a great opportunity for the community to actually
engage in a dialogue with art and artists: "When the
artwork is hanging on a wall, people nod their heads and
go 'hmm' and keep walking. The t-shirt is an alternative
presentation that is so much more approachable. It's an
important way to get people to talk more openly and
interact with art."
Interact with Perales and the rest of the S/ART/Q
artists from 5 to 10 p.m. next Sat., Sept. 11 at their
second annual Print Party at the
HuB (1421 Blvd. of the
Arts in the Rosemary District). This is a free,
family-friendly event and each print is just $5.
