[ knock knock ]
The I Am Home Art Project is auctioning nine doors currently on display at
the Art Center Sarasota that have been painted by local homeless artists.
These doors reflect each artist’s strong emotional connections to what they
perceive as “home”. The intent of the sale is to help build a fund for IAH
to secure a permanent classroom space for its artists. “Week by week new
homeless people find out about IAH and we are out of space in our current
location. We often have standing room only and have to take turns sharing
table space on Thursdays and Fridays,” says art instructor Barbara Gerdeman.
At the event, new and returning homeless artists, Kevin and Darryl,
respectively, will offer live portraits and spoken word poetry and the nine
door-artists will be present. Even though the artists need money, these
artists volunteered to paint the doors with the hope that their door will
sell to benefit the art program. They will not receive a commission on the
door sales; however, they will be selling their own paintings on June 3rd,
which will benefit them. For additional information please contact
I Am Home
Art Project director, Janet Taylor at 941- 914- 2591 or Brenda Smoak at
941-201-7282.

June 24 and beyond
[ the banyan is coming, the banyan is coming ]
The Banyan Theater Company is gearing up for a hot 2010 summer season. The
opening play is “Ghosts” by Henrik Ibesn. It is described thusly,
“Considered Ibsen’s most controversial play, Ghosts caused a furor when it
was first published and it remains one of the Norwegian master’s most
influential works. Mrs. Alving wants to protect her late husband’s memory
and avoid the awful truth: he was a cheating, immoral philanderer whose
public reputation was a sham. Things begin to unravel when their dying son,
Osvald, announces his plan to marry the family’s maid.” (using “thusly”
makes us sound fancy and smart, eh?) Be sure to check the
Banyan website for
details and this and the other two plays in the series. There’s also a
pre-show dinner on opening night. Call 941-358-5330 for details.
