Our Featured Artist is Dennis Heil.
Dennis painted the image above and it is now gracing shopping bags at many
Whole Foods Markets in the U.S., as well as in England and Canada. The woman
on the bag, Losiana, with her child, is an actual Haitian micro-credit
client of the Whole Planet Foundation. The painting and bags will create
awareness of the Whole Planet Foundation program and encourage people to
donate, thus empowering women and changing the lives of all involved.
The Whole Planet Foundation's
mission is to create economic partnerships with the poor in those
developing-world communities that supply Whole Foods Market with products.
Through innovative assistance for entrepreneurship, including direct
microcredit loans and tangible support for other community partnership
projects, the Whole Planet Foundation seeks to unleash the energy and
creativity of every human being they work with in order to create wealth and
prosperity in emerging economies.
Dennis is originally from Pennsylvania and moved to Sarasota in 2001. An
artist and illustrator, Dennis perfected his craft at the
Ringling College of Art and Design. He
is the illustrator for
Edible Sarasota Magazine and also works as a freelance artist for books
and editorial publications. He is married and has a daughter, Zoe, who is
also an artist.
Dennis' wife, Nikki, is the Marketing Director at
Whole Foods
Market Sarasota and the Whole Planet Foundation Ambassador for the state
of Florida. Nikki traveled to Guatemala, with the Whole Planet Foundation,
in 2008 and spent thirty days helping the local communities build efficient
and clean cook stoves for their modest homes and worked with kids in their
schools. Nikki has been selected by the
Rotary Club of Sarasota,
and District 6960, as a goodwill ambassador for Rotary's highly selective
Group Study Exchange (GSE) program. She left yesterday, May 12, for a
month-long tour of Rotary District 5010 in Russia (the Siberia part of
Russia). While there, Nikki will visit dozens of Russian cities and stay
with local Rotarians, in their homes, experiencing their lives, culture and
business. A GSE Team from Russia is here right now, doing the same. |
