THE 12TH ANNUAL SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL April 9 thru April 18, 2010
The 12th Annual SARASOTA
FILM FESTIVAL will open on Friday evening April 9 and run through
Sunday, April 18, 2010. The Festival will be presented at Sarasota’s Regal
Cinemas Hollywood with events taking place at various venues throughout
downtown Sarasota and beyond. The Festival opens with
THE EXTRA MAN at Sarasota’s premiere venue the
Van Wezel Performing Arts Center.
Additional highlights include 160+ film screenings, a Tribute honoring
Director John Landis, an
exclusive live Staged Reading of an un-produced screenplay and much more
over the 10-day event.
The Sarasota Film Festival continues to grow and evolve by presenting new
and exciting programs for both the community to enjoy, as well as to
increase the importance of the festival within the international film
industry. The exciting new Investors Lab will create financial partnerships
among established filmmakers and the investment community in order to foster
the development and production of independent film. Audiences will enjoy our
first-ever staged reading of a work in progress as part of The Lab – QUEER,
directed by Steve Buscemi, and written by Oren Moverman. We continue our “In
Conversation With...” series, the audience award competition in all
categories, and our award-winning Outreach and Education Programs. Exciting
new programs which are of particular interest to the local community include
Cinema Diaspora: International Perspectives on Jewish Identity, Views From
The Sunshine State: Sarasota & Florida Filmmakers, and Through Women’s Eyes,
a partnership with GCC UNIFEM. We of course continue the tradition of the
events, soirees and glamorous parties that the Sarasota Film Festival does
so well.
Tickets for individual films go on sale to the general public on Friday
March 19 at 11:00 AM. For the convenience of our patrons our new Box Office
is located at 1990 Main Street and 301(Washington St.) directly across from
the Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20 in the Synovus Bank Building. Tickets are
also available on the
Festival website or by calling 941-366-6200 (1-866-575-FILM).
“Director of Programming Holly Herrick and I have been working all year to
discover the best in contemporary cinema for our festival,” said Artistic
Director Tom Hall. “With the launch of our new Investors Lab, our special
Tribute to John Landis, and the festival’s first ever staged reading, the
scope of the Sarasota Film Festival programs continues to grow and
distinguish Sarasota as an important home for the filmmaking community.”
“It’s energizing to bring new programs with local flair to our community,”
said President Mark Famiglio. “Highlighting the work of local filmmakers and
bringing specific programming that relates to Sarasota will make the
festival a success on many different levels.”
A full description of all of the films screening and events at this year’s
festival are available in the 2010 SFF catalogue and/or

Critic on the Run
Welcome to the Machine ~ Marty Fugate |
 |
Sophie Treadwell's Machinal is a scary artifact of a lost era. Her
play (based on a true story!) is an expressionistic bad trip from the 1920s
about a secretary who married her boss and then killed him for true love. I
figure the playwright asked herself "Why would somebody do that?" and then
answered the question with this play. Her central character is defined as a
character without choices. She's trapped in a machine. That machine is
society. Patriarchal, oppressive, hierarchial and deadly.
OK. Nightmarish. (...click
