We are fortunate to have the East West College of
Natural Medicine right here in Sarasota. Students come
from around the world to study at East West and many of
the professional graduates practice locally. The

Home Resource (furniture
showroom). Audiences sit among the actors, on the showroom sofas and chairs,

The Banyan Theater Company
presents "Ghosts"
by Henrik Ibsen from June 24 – July 11. Considered Ibsen's most
controversial play, Ghosts caused a furor when it was first published and it
remains one of the Norwegian master's most influential works. Mrs. Alving
wants to protect her late husband's memory and avoid the awful truth: he was
a cheating, immoral philanderer whose public reputation was a sham. Things
begin to unravel when their dying son, Osvald, announces his plan to marry
the family's maid. Performances at The Jane B. Cook Theatre, FSU Center for

Venice Theatre is hosting the
AACT International 2010. AACT stands for
American Association of
Community Theatre, and this is their international festival. Theatre
troupes from more 11 countries, 6 continents, will perform, in their native

performances. Troupes are from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Poland,
Russia, Singapore, Spain, Zimbabwe and, representing the United States...

[ sshhh... it’s a secret ]
"Family Secrets," a one-woman play starring Carolyn Michel and directed by
Howard Millman opens at Florida Studio Theatre on June 30 and runs through
July 25. In Family Secrets, Michel portrays five family members, based on
the eccentric family of playwright and original performer Sherry Glaser. The
play weaves through the unique stories of the family members from patriarch
Mort and motherly Bev to earth-child daughter Kahari, sixteen year old
Sandra as well as Grandma Rose, who is finding romance in her golden years.

Gloria Cropper,
Anna Maria Island fiber artist, and
Cecy
Richardson, Cortez mixed-media artist, have been chosen as Featured
Artists for July at Island Gallery West. Both women are long-time members of
the Island Gallery West artists' cooperative, which is celebrating its 20th
Anniversary this year. The theme of their display will be "The Fourth of
July" and will feature Ms. Cropper's contemporary, sculptural, coiled
baskets and Ms. Richardson's imaginative paintings enhanced with collage,
printing techniques and watercolors.

[ heart’s desire ]
Hearts Desire in the
Village of the Arts will host Barbara Cochran for the
months of July and August. Ms. Cochran creates HDR (High Dynamic Range)
Photography. Each picture is a product of several exposures merged together
to bring out all the details from bright to dark. Her images expose the
beauty that is often hidden or lost under faded paint; literally bringing

[ a spectacular fourth ]
Dr. Joseph Holt, formerly the official pianist of The U.S. Army Chorus, who
delighted and inspired Washington D.C. “Capitol Fourth” audiences for over
twenty years, will bring his incredible talent and musical fireworks for the
first time to Sarasota during Gloria
Musicae’s annual July 4th celebration,
to be held at 4:00 p.m., at the
Historic Asolo Theater.
The concert will feature inspiring and thrilling arrangements of popular

Theatre announces the
2nd
Annual 2010 Sarasota Improv Festival. A two-day event, July 16 and 17,
the festival will highlight great improvisation companies from across the
state of Florida and throughout the United States. The festival will also
feature workshops, such as Improv For Dummies, Talking Heads Anonymous,
Interactive Improv and more. The improv troupes performing are from all over

Art Center Sarasota is offering a
brand new series this summer for adults:
Themed Sketch Nights. The first session begins on June 24 from 5:30 -
8:30 pm and will change themes weekly. These are open, drop-in drawing
sessions with no instructor for artists 18 and over. Fee $12 ACS members,
$16 nonmembers per Sketch Night. Each session will feature unique and
unusual models, settings and genres. Artists can expect everything from the
classical and romantic to the sexy and risqué.

The Sarasota County Arts Council accepting nominations for individuals
interested in serving on the panel for Sarasota County’s Tourist Development
Cultural/Arts grants program. TDC/A grants are administered by the Sarasota
County Arts Council, and approximately $1.2 million is distributed annually
through the TDC/A grant program to Sarasota County arts and cultural
organizations who meet the criteria for artistic excellence and tourism
appeal. Grant panelists should have a broad range of expertise and
experience in the artistic and management areas of the arts, such as visual
arts, performing arts, arts and cultural administration, business, finance,
marketing or tourism. Panel meetings are typically held in the spring
(April-May). Panelists must also be able to attend a variety of arts and
cultural events throughout the year. Panelist nomination forms are available online. For

Art Center Sarasota is inviting
member artists to submit work to an all media juried exhibition titled
Outside Looking In. Outside - looking in is what every artist does best.
Members are encouraged to
submit their very best
work as there will be no guarantees that one piece will get in to the
show. Only 150 pieces will be accepted. Five awards will be presented: $500
first place, $300 second place, $200 third place, Merit Award winner will
receive a gift certificate and a number of honorable mentions will be
selected. This exhibition showcases (July 29 – October 23) to the community
the exceptional talent and creativity alive at Art Center Sarasota.

Bonni Bakes Edible Art is
having a Café (Community Art Fundraising Event), in
Bradenton’s Village of the Arts
In a nutshell, or soup bowl, here’s how it works: Up to 10 artists can
submit (modest) proposals for an art project that will Benefit Bradenton
and/or the VoA. Then on the 27th Bonni Bakes is having a soup dinner event
at the café. The per person charge is $10 (all of which goes with the
grant). Artists will be there to discuss their ideas and each diner gets a
vote toward which artist/project gets the grant. Pretty cool. To get an idea
