Advance notice
[ time to plan ]
Yes, it is a ways out, but tickets went so fast last year and many readers
asked for a heads-up this year, so here it is.
Florida Studio Theatre
announces the
2010 Sarasota Improv Festival.
A two-day event, July 16 and
17, the festival will highlight great improvisation companies from across
the state of Florida and throughout the United States. The festival will
also feature workshops, such as Improv For Dummies, Talking Heads Anonymous,
Interactive Improv and more. Each workshop will be taught by the
professional Improvisers attending the festival. “We were thrilled with the
response to the inaugural festival last year. It was 48 hours of non-stop
lunacy. People would come for one show and stay for the whole weekend,” says
Rebecca Langford, FST’s Managing Director and Director of the FST Improv
Program, “We are looking forward to the second edition as we bring together
a diverse group of comedic talents.” The improv troupes performing are
from all over the country and this festival is a blast. You can buy tickets
for one show or spend just $49 and attend the entire weekend.

[ wake up ]
The Golden Apple Dinner Theatre presents “The Drowsy Chaperone; A Musical
Within a Comedy.” The
Wikipedia
website has a pretty good description of the plot: “The Man in Chair, a
mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his "non-specific
sadness", listens to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy, “The
Drowsy Chaperone.” As he listens to this rare recording, he is transported
into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is
transformed into an impressive Broadway set with seashell footlights,
sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes... (more)”
For tickets and information, call 941-366-5454.

shine light on and bring voice to factory workers, immigrant laborers,
African Americans, Native Americans and the working poor. Film screening

June 24 and beyond
[ the banyan is coming, the banyan is coming ]
The Banyan Theater Company is gearing up for a hot 2010 summer season. The
opening play is “Ghosts” by Henrik Ibesn. It is described thusly,
“Considered Ibsen’s most controversial play, Ghosts caused a furor when it
was first published and it remains one of the Norwegian master’s most
influential works. Mrs. Alving wants to protect her late husband’s memory
and avoid the awful truth: he was a cheating, immoral philanderer whose
public reputation was a sham. Things begin to unravel when their dying son,
Osvald, announces his plan to marry the family’s maid.” (using “thusly”
makes us sound fancy and smart, eh?) Be sure to check the
Banyan website for
details and this and the other two plays in the series. There’s also a
pre-show dinner on opening night. Call 941-358-5330 for details. |

[ new idea ]
Bonni Bakes Edible Art is
having a Café (Community Art Fundraising Event), in
Bradenton’s Village of the Arts
In a nutshell, or soup bowl, here’s how it works: Up to 10 artists can
submit (modest) proposals for an art project that will Benefit Bradenton
and/or the VoA. Then on the 27th Bonni Bakes is having a soup dinner event
at the café. The per person charge is $10 (all of which goes with the
grant). Artists will be there to discuss their ideas and each diner gets a
vote toward which artist/project gets the grant. Pretty cool. To get an idea
of what type of grants have worked in other communities, visit
www.feastinbklyn.org and click on
the list of “Grantees” on the side of the screen. Call 941-746-6647 for
