Jaszy McAllister
 |
As with many who come to Sarasota to feel the sand
between their toes and the sun on their face, creative
inspiration came in no short supply for
Jasmine "Jaszy"
McAllister. Shortly after arriving to the area, she
began working with beads, stringing together colorful
gifts for friends and family. Introduced to gemstones by
her grandfather James, after whom she was named, Jaszy
furthered her own education, teaching herself to work
with wire and increasing the complexity of her craft.
Eventually, her friends and family would accept no more
of her charity and demanded to pay for the bracelets,
necklaces, and earrings she was creating. Realizing the
demand for her newfound hobby, Jaszy started selling her
jewelry not only to loved ones, but also to boutiques,
jewelry stores, and galleries throughout the area.
Getting more in touch with her creative side, Jaszy
began to expand her artistic expression beyond jewelry
and onto the stage. She made her debut under the
direction of KT Curran in the
Source
Theatre's The Day I Opened My Eyes and went
on to steal scenes in The Good Body,
Private High, Smokey Joe's Cafe, The
Holding Cell, and Jar the Floor.
Expanding her
acting chops even further, she made the move to film
in The Tobacco Club and Protecting Jacob. She was also
nominated for a Sarasota Herald Tribune Reader's Choice
Award as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her
role in Hank Williams: Lost Highway in which her husband
Steve
played the title role.
As Steve and Jaszy started planning their new life
together, she began growing more aware of her impact in
the community and on the planet, forcing her to take
another look at her jewelry business. Realizing the
ecological damage that comes from the mining of
gemstones, she set out to include more eco-friendly and
Fair Trade elements into her creations. However, as she
researched the environmental initiatives in the jewelry
industry, she started to grow more passionate about the
environmental movement as a whole. Having never really
considered herself to be a "treehugger," she recognized
that eco-awareness wasn't just for a fringe group
anymore. There was a growing movement of which she and
Steve seemed destined to be a part. It was the movement
of the "modern hippie."
Jaszy's research led her to begin blogging about her
eco-journey, and in August of last year, she officially
launched
Modern Hippie Mag, an online resource for hip,
healthy, conscious living. Moving past the caricature of
the old school hippie as a tie-dyed, hygiene-deficient
drop-out, Jaszy ventured to bring the ideals of that
movement - peace, love, community, and appreciation for
nature - into the new age. The
website now features
twelve regular contributors and several guest
contributors covering such themes as fashion, beauty,
family, pets, media, and business. Jaszy not only serves
as Editor-in-Chief, but also lends her charismatic charm
to host a number of videos about various
eco-initiatives, produced by Steve with camera support
by Stephen McFadden. Both Jaszy and Steve also conduct
podcast interviews with authors, activists, and
eco-entrepreneurs.
While a few pieces of Jaszy's handcrafted jewelry can
still be found at
Butterfly Effect and
Juno & Jove in
downtown Sarasota, Jaszy has put away her jewelry-making
tools for the time being, and is focusing exclusively on
the growth of Modern Hippie Mag. Promoting social
awareness and conscious capitalism, Jaszy's latest
artistic endeavor is to help create a greener, healthier
planet.

grant). Artists will be there to discuss their ideas and each diner gets a
vote toward which artist/project gets the grant. Pretty cool. To get an idea
of what type of grants have worked in other communities, visit
