Patrick Kilbane
of Sarasota barbershop quartet The Truetones
 |
While barbershop music is not traditionally considered a
young person’s genre of choice, local financial advisor
Patrick
Kilbane is proving that good old fashioned music is
truly fun for all ages. About four years ago when
Kilbane was just starting out in his position at Smith
Barney, a client named Charlie Alexander, then a spry 82
years old, invited Patrick to come and check out the
chorus he was a part of. Kilbane was hesitant, telling
his friend that he didn’t sing, but Charlie was quick to
counter saying, “you’re Irish, of course you sing!”
Accepting the challenge and also viewing the
introduction as a beneficial networking opportunity,
Kilbane arrived at his first rehearsal expecting a small
church choir. He was blown away by the 100-man strong
Chorus of the
Keys —
and the fact that he was the youngest guy in the room by
a good 20 or 30 years. Kilbane was intrigued though, and
wanted to expand upon his singing experience which had
previously been limited to the car or the shower. After
sitting in for a few weeks, Kilbane was surprised to
find out he actually could sing, and when one the
quartets within the Chorus lost their lead they asked
him to step in.
Now, several years later, Kilbane has even performed
with his quartet, The Truetones, at the State Barbershop
Championship in Jacksonville. He relates his first
competition experience to “a freight train going
downhill,” describing how his nerves caused him to
barrel through the song. But the experience has helped
him to mature both as a performer and as a person. Says
Kilbane, “it has really given me a sense of confidence
when it comes to public speaking and client
presentations.”
Kilbane’s vocal range makes him a natural choice to sing
lead, which is often considered the easiest part to sing
because the lead carries the melody. Again, however,
this role has often caused him to feel the pressure as
all eyes are on the man in front. Being on stage with
just three guys initially proved a challenge but,
Kilbane explains, “it’s a bit easier when you’ve got
three other individuals up there going through the same
experience you are. I’m sort of insulated by having the
guys next to me — I’ve got my Linus blanket.”
Though he is still the young guy in the Chorus, Kilbane
enjoys singing ballads likes Frank Sinatra’s “The Way
You Look Tonight” or “And So It’s Over” by The Four
Freshman. His favorite part of being a part of the
Chorus, though, is “going to grab a bite to eat after a
gig down at Epicure. We’ll sit in the restaurant and at
some point we’ll all start singing. To see the crowd
stop talking and just listen to this music coming out of
nowhere is really incredible.”
Check out Patrick Kilbane with The Truetones as well as
Chorus of the Keys quartets So Much More and The Bowery
Boys at 2:00 p.m., this Saturday, July 24 at the
Glenridge
Performing Arts Center. Tickets are just $17.50 or $5
for children and after the performance GPAC theatre
manager Ben Turoff will personally scoop free Italian
Ice for all attendees while they mingle with the
performers. Call 941-552-5325 for more info or visit
(Patrick is active in the community, having served on
the Board and as Chair of the
Sarasota
Young Professionals Group (YPG). He is also a member
of the Rotary
Club of Sarasota, and has served as a past officer
and director. In his free time, when not working and
singing, Patrick is an avid
kite
boarder and sportsman. Patrick reaches new heights
as a mountain climber, having reached the summit of some
of the tallest peaks on the continent.)
