Featured Artists Meg Pierce ![]() |

Meg is in many
ways a typical Sarasota story. From Buffalo, her family
vacationed on Longboat Key in the sixties and eventually
most migrated to the area for the natural beauty and the
arts. After receiving an MA in Art and Art Education from Columbia University and an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute, she taught art in public school on Long Island for 32 years. Teaching was a great source of energy and pride for her but she always continued to sell and show her art widely in the New York area. Her current work is highly intricate and intensely crafted and can range from complex mandalas with photos, and beads to large mixed media triptychs using vintage laces, buttons and other sewing notions. Circular and grid structures are used to organize the painstaking and subtle variations of the hundreds of pins, threads and bits of lace. It is ultimately a contemporary art using memory- provoking sources. The layering and glazing techniques that combine brushwork and collage reward close and attentive examination. Meg is the recipient of the 2009-2010 John Ringling Towers Visual Artist Award from the Sarasota Arts Council that included the Fine Arts Society of Sarasota Residency at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood, Florida. The work can be seen in her Towles Court Studio 1938 Adams Lane Sarasota, Florida and in the upcoming Sarasota Art Center “Fiber of Our Being” Exhibit through January 8, 2011 - 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. |
