“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” may seem like the plot to every romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant, but it’s actually the name of a play at Florida Studio Theatre that has been so well received that it’s hereby extended, by the power invested in me by me, until January 16, 2011. It is, “A musical joyride through the phases of love. From the first stages of romance, to marriage, parenthood and beyond. This witty revue about love and relationships exposes everything you've secretly thought about romance but were afraid to admit.” Call 941-366-9000.

The Alliance Française of Sarasota presents "Love Affair with the South of France", "Amour du Midi," a one woman show of plein air paintings, poems and prose in English and French by Marguerite Jill Dye in the Towles Court Pavilion, Suite 2, the new location of the Alliance Française of Sarasota. 941-955-0700.

Circus Sarasota is our circus, right here in Sarasota County. They live here, they work here, they shop here and they spend proceeds from their season on helping out right here in our community. They are not some big 3-ring circus that allegedly beats a bunch of animals into submission for human enjoyment. Circus Sarasota is circus in the European tradition of skill, craft and showmanship instead of glitz, dancing bears and chained elephants. This season, give Circus Sarasota a try. Check out the details on the website for the season that starts February 3.

Did you know that Sarasota has a Magic Dinner Theater? Well, it does. Houdini’s Showplace is at the Classic Car Museum on 41, just south of University. The magic show includes dinner and a tour of the car museum and runs on select Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday December 26 and New Year’s Eve. Call 941-925-8021 for details.

On January 4, Art Center Sarasota presents “An Evening with Ruth Adler Schnee - a living legend in modern design” in connection to the current Fiber of Our Being textile exhibition. The FSU/Asolo Conservatory presents “Reasons to be Pretty," by Neil LaBute, in the Cook Theatre (with only 161 seats, it is a very intimate setting). This scathing, dark comedy by one of today’s most celebrated authors, explores our culture’s fixation on surface beauty. When a young man makes a casual comment about his girlfriend’s appearance, he finds himself in the midst of a storm that threatens to destroy not only their relationship—but also his friendships with his co-workers. [ cello cello, I don’t know why you say good bye, I say cello ]

Well, that was certainly the longest title for a piece in AnythingArts.com Newsletter ever! Now that we have your attention: don’t miss the 8:00 p.m. performance of cellist Lynn Harrell with pianist Jon Kimura Parker at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Harrell will play selections from Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms and Bach. This is part of the Sarasota Concert Association’s 5-concert series. Call 941-955-0040 for tickets and information.

Thursdays, January 20 - February 24, 2011r> [ improv workshop ]

Ever watch actors creating improv comedy and wonder if you could do it? The answer is, you can. There are techniques behind the seemingly spontaneous bursts of on-stage hilarity. These improv techniques can be taught—and Christine Alexander will be happy to do it for you. Alexander, will lead a six-week, beginner’s improv workshop, at The HuB, 1421 Blvd. of the Arts, in Sarasota. The workshop will cover the basic rules of improv, scene work techniques, and stage presence. Classes are every Thursday, 6:30-9 p.m. $179 per person, 18 and over. Space is limited to 15 students.
