Tom Murray

(reprinted from the
Sarasota Herald Tribune, July 31, 2010, with the
permission of
Billy Cox,
writer)
Sarasota filmmaker Tom Murray, whose documentaries were regular
features at the annual Gay and Lesbian Film Celebration
at Burns Court, suffered a fatal heart attack at his
home Thursday afternoon.
Tom Murray, who died Thursday at 65, was known for his
documentaries.
"It was quick," said friend Vince Kieler. "The
paramedics tried everything, but they couldn't bring him
back."
A native of Woodstock, Ill., the 65-year-old Murray was
a home inspector who began making movies in 2004. The
former Peace Corps volunteer, cab driver, store manager
and construction worker had recently completed a rough
cut of his seventh film, on spirituality.
"He loved film, he thrived on it," said Jim Jablonski,
who frequently previewed Murray's documentaries before
the final edits. "He said to me on more than one
occasion that he wished he'd realized his passion long
before."
Murray's films -- which often focused on the lives and
challenges of gay and lesbian Americans -- reached film
festival audiences from New York to Yuma, Ariz.
"He wanted to correct the fallacies about the gay and
lesbian community," Jablonski said. "He wanted to show
how silly so many of our policies and prejudices really
are against human beings who are just living normal
lives."
Murray explored eclectic aspects of that
often-marginalized culture, from gay rodeos to reversing
sex-change surgeries. In 2007, he challenged the U.S.
military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy with a
documentary called "Tell."
"So many groups identified as minorities feel isolated
by society," Murray told the Herald-Tribune in 2007,
"but in the military, you feel like you're a part of
something, you belong to a group. That's why there's
such sadness when you're asked to leave.
"I'd like to think, 20 years from now, we'll look back
and say, 'I can't believe we treated people like that.'"
Murray is survived by a brother, Mike Murray, and
sister, Patricia Nelson, both of Woodstock.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Kieler said
Murray's ashes will be placed at his parents' graves in
Woodstock.

Two Faces on a Tombstone."

Man." Side Man tells the story of a troubled family set against the backdrop
of the waning years of the jazz era. The play is told in selected flashbacks
by Clifford, as he relates the story of his father, a passionate and
talented jazz trumpeter, and his mother, a woman whose marriage was
destroyed by her husband’s devotion to his music. Side Man garnered the
Oppenheimer Award for Best New American Playwright, eventually going on to
be nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and winning the 1999 Tony
Award for Best Play. Directed by Jim Wise, Side Man features Dan Bright,
Steve DuMouchel and Robert Herrle. Check the schedule on the

[ sylvia ]
Come celebrate the dog days of summer when
Florida Studio Theatre unleashes
“Sylvia," A. R. Gurney’s hilarious canine fantasy about love and
relationships. After 22 years of marriage, Upper East Side empty-nesters
Kate and Greg finally have time to work on their strained relationship. But
when Greg brings home a flirtatious stray mutt, an unlikely love triangle
develops as wife and dog vie for Greg’s attention. Played by an actress,
this precocious, street-smart poodle/lab mix not only talks back when spoken
to, but also quotes Homer and sings Cole Porter - making her a formidable
“other woman” in one of the most unusual romantic triangles in the history
of theater. Call 941-366-9000 for tickets and
information.

Mote’s Response to the Gulf Oil Disaster: Public Invited to
Aug. 11 Panel Discussion
July 29 marks the 100th day following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon
oil rig - the largest man-made disaster the Gulf of Mexico has ever seen.
...The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that the
amount of oil that flowed into the Gulf of Mexico each day between the April
22 explosion and installation of a temporary cap in mid-July was equal in
size to five or six Exxon-Valdez spills occurring each day.
There are many questions regarding what this disaster means for the future
of the Gulf and for the animals that live in this unique body of water.
To help answer these questions, Mote Marine
Laboratory is inviting members
of the community to participate in a forum discussion focused on the
current studies that Mote scientists are undertaking to understand the
environmental impacts of this disaster and ways to restore the Gulf.
The discussion will include the opportunity for the public to submit
questions to a panel of Mote scientists representing a variety of scientific
disciplines.
What: Oil Disaster Discussion at Mote Marine Laboratory
When: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11
Where: Mote Marine’s Immersion Cinema, 1600 Ken Thompson
Parkway, Sarasota, 34236
Cost: Free
RSVP REQUIRED: Please call 941-388-4441, ext. 172
