Featured Artist
Lori Frary |
 |
|
Lori Frary has been an artist
since she was old enough to hold crayons. She’s evolved her style and
abilities over a career that’s spanned 50 years, and has included being a
service business owner, a retailer, a commercial general contractor and
property developer and decorative artist. Each of these careers taught her
the skills she now has to create art and own a gallery. Her art comes from
concepts she thinks up that relate to the ironies of her life. Lori uses
found or salvaged materials to create combines (a la Rauschenberg and
Picasso). She also paints on canvas. In 2009, Lori opened the Frary Gallery
in Sarasota’s Rosemary district to not only display her work, but to do the
same for other self-trained artists unable to find a local gallery that
appreciated their style or methods. Lori has met with measurable success at
doing both. Many local artists have sought out the gallery because the word
on the street is she will at least look at it and try to show it to see
how—or if—it will sell. Lori’s art is always on display at the gallery but
she is bent on promoting emerging contemporary artists who create
interesting new pieces and think outside the realm of beach art. The newest
gallery artist is Darwin Leon. His work will be featured at a solo show
opening on May 28. Darwin was discovered this month as a result of the
Fringe Gallery—a pop-up gallery associated with Sarasota’s Fringe Film
Festival. Lori says she will be doing more pop-up shows when another empty
building becomes available. |

"I have found AnythingArts.com to be the most effective vehicle for
my marketing efforts in Sarasota." ~ John Burr (advertise

Congratulations!
I (Rick) have known Carol-Ann Warr for about eleven years;
since the days when I managed the Palmer Ranch office of
Michael Saunders & Company and Carol-Ann was one of my
agents. I hadn't seen Carol-Ann for quite some time, and
usually it was a passing wave downtown somewhere. Well,
Wednesday I saw her in line at Publix, and serendipity
followed. You see, on Tuesday night I was reading the
Gotham Writer's Workshop book, "Writing Fiction." I have
owned the book for a couple of years, and I sometimes pick
it up and kid myself that I am going to actually put my many
ideas into novel form (I actually have 45 pages of a novel
that otherwise exists only in my head- I haven't touched it
in 4 years). I have been leery of taking Gotham's acclaimed
on-line writing course because, frankly, I am budgetorious
(sounds better than “cheap”) and afraid I won't get my
money's worth. When I closed the book, around midnight, I
thought that I should put out a call on the AnythingArts.com
website and Facebook to see if anyone I know has taken the
course. Fast forward to Publix just fifteen hours later: I
say hi to Carol-Ann and ask what's new. She replies that she
has just finished a second Gotham writing course and I
momentarily suspend my skepticism of "The
Secret" and all that "the universe draws to you the
things you think about" stuff. Anyway, it turns our
Carol-Ann has had a piece published and
here is a link to it, for your reading enjoyment.
Congratulations Carol-Ann! |
