WSLR 96.5 LPFM (low power fm) is our,
yours and mine, local grassroots, listener supported radio station. The WSLR
MIssion Statement reads: "WSLR is an innovative, listener-supported,
non-profit, non-commercial FM radio station dedicated to serving the
Sarasota community. WSLR features locally produced programming and presents
cultural, artistic, and political perspectives currently underrepresented in
the media. Our goal is to inform and empower listeners to play an active
role in WSLR and in their community. WSLR’s programming promotes
equality, peace, sustainability, democracy, and social and economic justice."
What does all that mean to you? It means that you get to hear all kinds of
great music that you won't hear on the commercial stations; because the
volunteer DJs make the decisions based on their, and your, taste and not
just what's on the charts. It also means you get live talk and news radio
that engages local citizens and national and international experts on the
topics that affect us right here in our community. Five days a week you can
listen to "Democracy Now" from 5-6 p.m. Local programming includes in the
Jumping Mullet Report, History of Bluegrass, Music of the World, Big Band
Files, Sunday Afternoon Jazz, The Creative Life, Truly Sustainable Sarasota,
Law & Disorder and the Surreal News... just to mention a few. The list of
unique shows goes on and on (check the WSLR website for a full programming
schedule).
If you like public radio, you can't get much more "public" than WSLR. The
people that run the station are just like you and me, everyday people from
all walks of life, dedicating hundreds of hours to bring you information and
entertainment that is served fresh, not "from a can" or one size fits all.
Listen in your car and you can always listen live on your computer, any
time.
WSLR is a non-profit and can only continue to serve our community if we
continue to support it--through volunteer work and donations. This year's
pledge drive is coming to an end soon and WSLR is very close to its goal.
Can you help? Click the image below and go to the WSLR website for more
information and to make a secure donation. Every little bit helps... |
