[ a bite of poe ]
Edgar Allan Poe is joined by detective novelist Anna
Katharine Green to present suspenseful stories during the
Powel Crosley
Theatre's "Poe at the Crosley." Remaining shows are 7:30
pm tonight and 2:00 pm October 31. Tickets cost $18-$22. "Party
With Poe" on Halloween night offers a hauntingly good
time at the
Crosley mansion, beginning at 6:30 pm with hors
d'oeuvres and cash bar, followed by a performance of "Poe at
the Crosley," concluding with Edgar and Katharine joining
you for desserts, coffee and conversation. Admission to this
ghoulish affair is $65 (or $20 for show only ... and don’t

Opens October 30
[ la traviata ]
Sarasota Opera and the
Sarasota Orchestra are again
collaborating on a fall opera season presenting Verdi’s beloved opera “La
traviata.” The performances will take place on October 30, November 1
(matinee), 3, 5, 8 (matinee), and 11 at the Sarasota Opera House. Tickets
for all six performances of “La traviata” are now on sale through the
Sarasota Opera box office at 941-366-8450 Ext. 1 or

[ zombie fest ]
The first annual Halloween
Zombie Fest happens from
8:00 pm – 2:00 am. The schedule begins at 6:00 pm at Classic Ink, 1310 3rd
Avenue West in Bradenton, where professional horror movie make-up artists
will zombify those without a zombie costume for $10. At 8:00, the Zombie
Walk begins and goes from
Classic Ink to
Mattison's Riverside for the 9:00 costume contest. From 9:30 pm to 2:00
am, enjoy live music on Old Main Street by three local bands: The Wankers,
Spankin' Fresh, and Rancid Polecats. The event is free to attend. |

[ a-haunting we will go ]
“We can't celebrate our 80th birthday without including all our guests ...
dead and alive!” Ghosthunters of
Sarasota is having a ghost tour/seminar at
The Players Theatre. The tour will
start at 11:00 pm and tickets are only $5 dollars per living person. Kim
Cool, author of five southwest Florida ghost books including the new Haunted
Theaters of Southwest Florida, will be there signing her books. Order your

the public to a free, classical chamber concert on Sunday,

will perform on piano, Ben Wensel on cello, and Marty Gold

Michael's Wine Cellar has become
the home of "Food For Thought" An Evening of Wine, Cuisine & Cultural
Conversation with Elizabeth Van Riper & Guests. Formerly held at Canvas Café
under the name of Eat, Drink & Think, the salon dinner series offers an
inside perspective on the personal creative evolution of the featured guest
and a three-course dinner. November 2 features
Sarasota Opera’s Maestro Victor
DeRenzi (pictured) and November 16 features sculptor Jack Down. Each event

[ the boy friend ]
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) fine and performing arts
department presents the musical comedy, “The Boy Friend,” at 8:00 pm on
November 6 and 7, and at 2:00 pm November 8, at Neel Performing Arts Center,
SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th Street West. Set on the French Riviera in 1926, the
play reveals life at an English finishing school for wealthy young girls.
When carnival time arrives, the girls have one goal in mind: to find a

Begins November 6
[ festival of skeletons ]
The
4th Annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration in
Bradenton’s Village of the Arts
begins November 6 at 6:00 pm and includes a street festival with live music
by Lady Z and Company, Mexican food by Casa del Sol, a juried art show, a
Village community shrine in honor of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego
Rivera, and individual altar displays at many galleries. There will be a
walking tour complete with decorated skeletons, altars and luminarias at
many galleries throughout the Village. This is a family event and community
members are welcome and encouraged to create an altar display as well! |

Opens November 10
[ why you dirty rotten ... ]
“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” the high-energy comedy about two
competing con artists on the French Riviera, opens on
Venice Theatre’s MainStage November
10 and runs through December 6. Based on the popular 1988 film starring
Steve Martin and Michael Caine, the musical version took Broadway by storm
in 2005 and 2006. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and was enjoyed by
audiences and critics alike. Tickets are $24 for adults, $12 for students

Anne Sullivan
and flutist Joan
Sparks have been playing together for two decades and were National
Flute Association Chamber Music Competition winners in 1988 and 1996. They
were invited to perform at Washington’s Kennedy Center in 2001 in a salute

Stephen King – Under The Dome – A Rare Appearance! Author of more than

The Towles Court Art District
is issuing a call to artists. The show is titled “Small Works” and is open
to all artists 18 years and older who are residents of Sarasota or Manatee
County. There will be two separate exhibits: Nov. 20 through Dec. 8, 2009
will be a showing of all accepted works. Dec. 11 through Dec. 18, 2009 will
be an exclusive winner’s exhibition. |

Mote Marine Laboratory is
now accepting entry applications for art representing Mote's 55 years of
preserving our world's marine environment and advancing marine science for
entry in a week-long exhibition in March. Selected artworks will be shown in
the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium 55th Anniversary Celebration Juried
Art Exhibition. The display will greet guests in Mote Aquarium, which
attracts 300,000 visitors each year, including the opening and closing
receptions and a silent auction. Catch a glimmering snook on canvas, sketch
a darting dolphin, get colorful with corals — explore the sea of
possibilities. For more

[ bridge run t-shirt design contest ]
Sarasota Family YMCA is looking
for local artists to design the T-shirt for the
New Balance Ringling Bridge
Run. The winning T-shirt design, which will be selected by the Bridge
Run race committee, will be printed on over 2,000 T-shirts. They are looking
for creative and inspiring designs that capture the excitement of this
family event. The overall winner of the contest will receive a free
six-month family membership at the Sarasota Family YMCA, free entry into the
2010 race, and a $100 gift certificate to New Balance Sarasota.
Complete design
requirements. Deadline for entries is November 2, 2009.
