What do YOU think?

It seems that everyone in Sarasota has an opinion about
the two most talked about smoochers in the city, the
Unconditional Surrender statue. There are those that
want it to stay because of nostalgia, a way to pay
homage to the “greatest generation.” Some actually go so
far as to
question the patriotism of detractors. There are also
those that say it isn’t “art” and that it should not be
on public land.
My opinion on the piece has changed, back and forth,
since it first appeared. I don’t particularly like it, I
wouldn’t vote for its permanent placement, but I don’t
have strong feelings one way or the
other anymore. Is it art? Heck if I know. If the junk
cars and giant tooth were “art”, then I guess that the
statue is art too.
I don’t think that a decision should be made based on
the fact that hoards of tourists take photos of the
piece. Sarasota has hopefully learned the hard lesson
that chasing dollars is not the best path. To me there
are others questions that top the list. For example,
there have been comments about a potential lawsuit and
whether or not the piece is a copyright infringement
(alleging that the artist may not have the right to
reproduce the piece from the famous photo). I am also
concerned about the on-going cost of maintaining the
piece for years to come; it is painted, after all, and
subjected to direct sun and salt water.
So, I am on the fence. I don’t think there will ever be
a consensus and I don’t foresee public art placement
becoming an item on our ballots. For now, the debate
rages around water coolers, on Blogs and in the
newspapers.
What do you think? We will post all opinion responses on
our website for others to read. The only thing is that
you must include your name and we reserve the right to
not place any comments that contain personal attacks on
real people… stick to the issue. Please limit your
comments to no more than 400 words (about the number you
see here). Email your thoughts to

[ bee dress ]
At the Ringling Museum: “The contemporary artists featured in
'Picturing Eden' examine the many facets of paradise, from a place of
contemplation and restoration to a site of loneliness and despair. The
exhibition is organized in four sections: Paradise Lost, Paradise
Reconstructed, Despairing of Paradise, and Paradise Anew. The photographs
explore the development and changing styles of the garden and concepts of
paradise. By looking at the notion of paradise and the garden through the
photographic lens, Picturing Eden highlights original lost innocence, the
ongoing significance of a humanistic, culturally charged environment, and
its place in the history of art. Eden or paradise, a place of great or
perfect happiness and satisfaction, is an ideal still sought today.”

[ special improv show fundraiser ]
We really need the help of our AnythingArts.com friends and family. On July
25th, the Sarasota Rotary Foundation presents the
Florida Studio Theatre
Improv Troupe, for one night only, at the Ringling College of Art & Design
to
raise money for a special cause. A couple of years ago a few local Rotary
Clubs built a playground for the special needs students of the Oak Park
School. The playground is the brightest spot in the day for many of the
students and therapeutic for many. The Florida heat requires that a sunshade
be built over the playground and,
again, Rotary has stepped up to fund the $90,000 project. You can help by
buying a $30 ticket and coming to this special event. You will laugh and
leave with a smile on your face knowing that your support has put a smile on
the faces of many wonderful and deserving kids.
Please help us.

Opening August 8
[ fat pig ]
No, it’s not the next statue coming to the bayfront!
The Banyan Theater
presents playwright Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig” through August 23 at the FSU
Center for Performing Arts’ Cook Theatre. Directed by Greg Leaming, “Fat
Pig” is described as follows: “Life is good for Tom. He’s successful at
work, has some great friends, and a fantastic new girlfriend who is big and
beautiful. He loves her, and that’s what counts. Isn’t it? When Tom’s office
buddies and ex-girlfriend find out that he is seeing a “plus size” woman
it’s not long before the whispers and mockery turn to relationship sabotage,
leading Tom to question if size does matter after all. Neil LaBute’s hit
comedy (don’t let the title fool you) is a biting story of love and
friendship, and a profound examination of the cultural influences that
define “attractive” in our society.” Some performances are followed by an
audience/cast talk-back, see the website for specifics. Also, “Old
Wicked” runs through August 2, in case you haven’t seen it yet.
