Feature Story
Heather Dunhill

Our Featured Artist is
Heather Dunhill.
I’m sure that most of our readers immediately recognize
Heather from her columns in the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
I have met Heather only a couple of times but hear of
and about her quite often. So, I posed some questions by
email because both of our schedules were full and my
deadline was looming. The photo above is by Barbara
Banks and includes Lucy and Rocco. Enjoy learning a
little about Heather, I did. –Rick Hughes
AA: So, where you born and where
did you spend your childhood?
HD: I was born in New York – love,
love, loved the change of seasons, being a tom-boy and,
man, there were some seriously good Italian cookies!
AA: What did you want to be, when
you where 12, when you grew up?
HD: I wanted to write children’s books
– in fact, I used to make mock-up’s of them with my
sister’s typewriter paper! She always wondered why she
was low on paper...
AA: What brought you to Sarasota
and when?
HD: I discovered Sarasota when one of
my friends opened an art gallery here – I couldn’t
believe this place – I fell in love with everything
about it, knew I was home and within thirty days I was
an official Sarasotan. I still feel the same about it
today as I did 13 years ago when I drove over the
Ringling causeway for the first time.
AA: When did you start writing and
taking photos?
HD: Aside from writing children’s books
as a child, I began writing and taking photos in high
school for the year book. I found a 35mm camera in our
home, asked my father if I could have it and was hooked!
AA: What jobs have you had?
HD: Oh, my. I’ve had my share of jobs
from working in a photography studio darkroom to testing
water turbidity with an environmental company to working
in a tea room in Atlanta, Georgia (a State in which I
feel I perfected my southern accent for impersonation
purposes!)
AA: Hobbies?
HD: In my down-time, I love to read
historical novels, go to museums, surf the internet for
new design concepts (fashion, art, architecture or
otherwise), love movies (especially at Burns Court) with
my girlfriends, and I love a cookbook!
AA: Married, single, stalker,
serial killer?
HD: Much to my surprise, I turned out
to be the marrying kind and have enjoyed settling down
with my husband Ted Meekma and two fur-kids (Boston
Terriers) Lucy and Rocco.
AA: Do you like to travel and what
is your dream vacation?
HD: UH! Would travel monthly if I
could! I can’t wait to visit Africa while the Wildebeest
are running the Serengeti – I want to witness the drama
from a hot air balloon.
AA: What about SRQ appeals to you
the most, to your sensibilities and to your fun side?
HD: I really enjoy that this city has
so much to offer in the way of the arts, in so many
interesting mediums with so many talented people.
AA: What do you think about the
fate of newspapers and influence of the web?
HD: This is truly an interesting
question. Now, I certainly cannot offer an expert
opinion but I can tell you that judging by the amount of
emails I get daily during season, a couple hundred per
day, in reference to coverage – seems that the
Herald-Tribune is important to this community!
AA: What is something that people
would be surprised to know about you?
HD: I was a mate on a catamaran in Key
West and I make my own chicken stock (that’s right, I
said it.).
AA: Do you have any frustrations
that you can share, pet peeves?
HD: Seriously, c’mon, I’m human. But
we’d have to be better friends before I’d share
them.....

RIGHT NOW
[ feed a kid ]
There are over 1,000 grade school kids in Sarasota County that go to bed
hungry nearly every night because there just isn’t food to be had in their
home. Some several hundred kids in Sarasota County are enrolled in school,
attend, and yet have no home. That’s right, they are homeless. So here is a
chance to help out! Through the
Warren BackPack Program, nutritionally
balanced non-perishables are packed and distributed to local schools in a
child-friendly backpack every Friday during the school year and at critical
drop sites during the summer. Businesses, organizations, and individuals can
help by making a donation or contacting us to get involved. Just $4.05 feeds
one hungry child for one weekend. Already,
AnythingArts.com members have
contributed enough that 37 kids will have something to eat this
weekend. Together, we can make this a reality for many more. Visit the
Gulf
Coast Community Foundation of Venice and help out. When you
do, be sure to write AnythingArts.com member in the special instructions box
so that they can see how artists and arts patrons step up to a challenge.
Thanks for helping. |

memories, daydreams and fantasies while being waited on by a very proper
waiter and the restaurant’s piano player. As the evening progresses the

deeper layers of their lives in scenes and songs until the meal ends and
