Skip Dydra - Muralist

Skip Dydra is an artist. He is primarily a muralist, specializing in Trompe L’oeil with an emphasis on creating site specific murals – especially those in public view. I first met Skip on Pineapple Avenue while he was working on a mural (I was probably one of a hundred people that interrupted him to talk about that day…sorry, Skip). Recently, Skip participated in a group project at The Hermitage Artist’s Retreat. I thought you'd enjoy hearing about this in Skip's own words, below. (Rick Hughes)

“A few weeks ago, I was privileged to be one of eight decorative artists from around the country invited to spend a week at The Hermitage on Manasota Key. The Hermitage is an artist retreat, which was originally started by the Sarasota Arts Council and is now self sustaining, from what I understand. You can read all about it on their website.

For our 'retreat', eight decorative artists from around the country were invited to spend a week here to paint a mural, which was given to the town of Englewood. Originally, we thought we might collaborate on one large mural, but quickly decided to showcase, in effect, what each of us does on a daily basis. So we each painted a four by eight foot panel... outside... under a tent... and the stars. It was quite the experience, and THAT is an understatement.

The artists, as I mentioned, came from all parts of the country... We had two brothers, Todd and Eric Lindburgh, from Virginia Beach, VA. Shannon Clark, from Hollywood, CA. Tania Seabock from San Francisco. Pat Ganino from somewhere in Connecticut. Elena Ortega from Key Largo, FL. Skip Dyrda (me)... from good old Sarasota and last but not least, Erik Schlake, from Englewood. It was Erik who had the original idea and posed it to Bruce Rodgers, curator at the Hermitage and then to the Englewood Community Redevelopment Authority. Ultimately, the entire project was funded and unanimously approved by the Sarasota County Commissioners.

By sundown on a lazy Sunday, we had all arrived and began to get to know each other. A few had met at various conventions and shows and most of us at least knew about each other but never met. It really didn't take long for all of us to...” (click here to see the murals and to read more).

Won’t you help? Consider it your AnythingArts.com subscription for the year. The “Got A Minute?” team put on the production of one-minute plays last week in a show of the same name, or commonly called GAM. This is an every-year event because breast cancer is still out there and still needs to be defeated. Got a minute? Give a little. Thanks.

[ booker vpa play ]

Thanks to a concise press release, we are just copying and pasting this right in from Candace Artim: "John Lennon & Me" written by Cherie Bennett is a play about how a young teen living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) - an inherited disease that assures a young death - handles her day to day existence spending most of her time in the hospital. Told in a humorous, quirky, "Juno-esque" way, "Star" our lead character takes us on a journey in which she becomes friends with her opposite, "Courtney" - a pretty, popular, cheerleader, who's apparently not seriously sick. Neither girl knows much about the other's world, but slowly they come to understand each other, and ultimately, themselves, in this powerful play about living life to the fullest.” The play is at Booker High school’s Visual & Performing Arts Center $15 for adults and $5 for students. Contact Judy Piercy at 941-355-2967 for tickets.

What are You Reading?
To Walt Whitman, America by Kenneth M. Price. The University of North Carolina Press, 2006.
I come back to Walt Whitman,
What in the hell happened to him,
Wasn’t he a white man?

--June Jordan (1)
Here is something rare these days, like spats or an Edsel: a review of a book about a poet in a popular press publication. No worries though, this is not primarily about poetry but rather the arts, culture and social change in America. I might venture a review of a book of poems next time, if AnythingArts invites me back.

Kenneth Price’s slim volume is not hot off the press. It is two years old, and viewable in its entirety, including photographs and notes, online. How’s that for a bookseller subverting his own business? I went ahead and procured the trade paperback anyhow; for me, reading online gets old quick, and I never tire of the sensual experience a real book provides.

If you have ever wondered about the persistent hype regarding the 19th century poet in question, this is one of the three books I recommend-(2). Price reveals one surprising connection after another between Whitman, art, novels, film and even a speech by Muhammad Ali. With the sparse elegance of a poet, the author pinpoints the profound influence Walt’s writing had on developments in gender relations, sexuality, race and creative expression over the last 150 years. Price emulates his subject, and calls up the marginalized identity in America and abroad, deftly empowering each distinctive voice.

It makes sense that, in this town, enamored as it is with art and films, readers will find To Walt Whitman, America engrossing. Perhaps the only thing some may find problematic about Price is that he has a way of making a reader hungry for more. That is a clue to the great thing about this cultural document. It satisfies but does not stupefy. He effectively advances the 21st century exploration of Whitman’s influence and endorses a renewal of the artistic quest of reinvention. Price reminds us that Whitman's malleability, explorations of passing, and centrality as an icon have made him irresistible for writers [artists and filmmakers] who, in extraordinarily creative ways, reinvent him for their purposes.

(
1) quoted in To Walt Whitman, America, Chapter 1.

(2)-The others are Walt Whitman: The Measure of His Song, Edited by Jim Perlman, Ed Folsom & Dan Campion; and Walt Whitman: A Cultural Biography, by David Reynolds.
