Featured Artist
Michael White

Our Featured Artist is
Michael White. Michael is an amazing artist, a
teacher of art and, as it turns out, at no loss for
words when writing either. Michael provided a “short”
auto-bio for us. It’s a revealing and inspirational
story of boy-meets-art, boy falls in love with art and
lives happily ever after...
Michael White's Biography in his own words.
Well let’s see... I was born in 1964 in Campbell
California, Michael James White. I was the son of a
military man and a southern bell. I discovered art early
drawing on and with anything I could get. Some of my
first art work was done on the card board inserts from
my mothers panty hose. By my second year I was already
filling up sheets of paper with scribbles of cars and
space ships. It was 1966 so what else was I suppose to
draw? By age 6 if you asked me what I wanted to be when
I grew up I’d quickly answer “an artist”. The fact is I
was already an artist and there was no stopping the
creative river I had tapped into. I don’t remember but
my relatives say I was easy to take care of if you just
gave me a pencil. I don’t know if I was completely
focused or if I was just bored. I was an only child and
the first grand child so I got lots of attention but I
was just one of those kids whose world was inside their
head instead of outside.
So here’s how it went down, I got my start in California
then started kindergarten in urban Coos Bay, Oregon with
lots of kids all around. However, my parents separated
and I somehow ended up on my Grand Fathers farm in York,
South Carolina. I like to say I could have been a surfer
but I ended up a red neck. Anyway, there were no other
kids on the farm so I had to make up an invisible
friend. I believe this is when my creativity really
blossomed because I had to come up with ways to
entertain myself. I did just that with my art and
imagination. Therefore, I continued to draw and explore
the farm and property. I especially enjoyed digging clay
out of the creek and making indian style pots and such.
I dried them on the porch. I was quite industrious. I
remember lining up tiki heads and bowls in a long row on
the porch to dry in the sun. I pretended I was an
American Indian and even squeezed berries to make paint
to decorate my creations. Ever nostalgic, I still have
some of these.
Around age 8 my mother re-married and I got out of the
country and into the ‘big city’ of Rock Hill South
Carolina. That’s a punch line. Rock Hill is a mill town
south of Charlotte, NC. I loved living near town because
I was finally around a lot of kids again. This took some
social adjustment. All of a sudden I had a step “bother”
and a stepsister and 2 cousins across the street. I
loved teaming up with other kids and torturing the
adults but when I got into socially sticky situations
with my brethren, I withdrew into my art. During this
period I went through several art phases. There was the
cute Disney character phase, animals of the world phase,
hot rods, 70’s pop art, and I even took to drawing from
the old masters paintings reprinted in my step father’s
big illustrated family bible. (click

Kirstin Franklin is a second year student in the FSU/Asolo Conservatory
for Actor Training program. She originally hails from Denver, Colorado, but
most recently lived in New York City. This season you’ll see her in the
character of Dot in the Conservatory’s upcoming production of Blur.
What inspired you to come to Sarasota to attend FSU/Asolo
Conservatory?
I’ve worked in the professional theater world for the past four years and
have been inspired by many fellow actors who had received clear beneficial
training from MFA programs. I chose FSU/Asolo because of the opportunities
it gives me to perform on the mainstage at the Asolo and for the renowned
faculty and directors that make up this program.
One valuable lesson you’ve learned so far at the Conservatory?
Getting your MFA in acting IS NOT A PIECE OF CAKE! It's academic and
challenging and rewarding.
Three major roles as an actor you want to tackle?
Abigail in The Crucible, Laura in The Glass Menagerie and Helen Keller in
The Miracle Worker.
Influences that inspire your work in theater?
Athol Fugard and his vision of theater as a vehicle for social change.
Dipankar Mukherjee, the director of Minneapolis's Pangea World Theater and
his visions of diversifying theater as we know it. Theatre de la Jeune Lune,
The City Company. The London Fringe. And actors who inspire me are Meryl
Streep, Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Alan Rickman, Randy Danson, Helen Mirren,
Maggie Smith and many more.
Goals? Dreams?
To work consistently! And, of course: London! Movies! Broadway!
What career do you intend to pursue after graduation?
I would love to make a name for myself at one of the many regional theaters
in the country—and to be given the opportunity to play a variety of roles
from year to year.
Observations about Sarasota?
A great community of people with a great appreciation for the arts! It’s a
good place for an actor. And it's beautiful here!
The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training is a
celebrated three-year graduate program culminating in a master of fine arts
degree. For more than 30 years, tens of thousands of actors from across the
continent have auditioned for admission. A maximum of 12 students are
admitted each year. In their second year, the students perform in the Cook
Theatre, a 161-seat space designed to create an intimate experience for the
audience and actors. Third-year students are seen on the Mertz Stage working
with the Asolo Repertory Theatre’s professional actors in exciting and
significant roles. The FSU/Asolo Conservatory’s 2008-2009 season includes
Wilder! Wilder! Wilder! Five One-Act Plays by Thornton
Wilder (Nov. 5-23); Blur by Melanie Marnich (Jan. 7-25);
Miss Julie by August Strindberg (March 4-22); and
Three Postcards, by Craig Lucas with music and lyrics by Craig
Carnelia (April 15-May 3). Tickets can be purchased in advance at the
Asolo
Repertory Theatre box office at the FSU Center for Performing Arts;
941-351-8000.

December 5 exhibit opening
[ syd et al ]
The Dabbert Gallery was kind
enough to submit this, as written: “During a period from the late 1940's
through the 1960's many people thought of Sarasota as just a small bohemian
artists' colony on the west coast of Florida. Looking back and seeing the
impressive variety of fine art produced by a small group of renowned artist,
we consider this period to be "A Golden Age of Sarasota Masters". Ben A.
Stahl, Syd Solomon, Thorton Utz, Jon Corbino and Jack Cartlidge are some of
the artist represented in a seven week exhibit "A Golden Age of Sarasota
Masters" at Dabbert Gallery. 941-955-1315. |
