Congratulations, Bravo and Yippee!!

The Booker High School Visual & Performing Arts
(VPA) theater department took top honors
at the Florida Theater Conference last weekend.
Congratulations to the department, who won first place
with their production of "John Lennon and Me." They
competed with 30 other high schools from the state of
Florida. Junior Mona Pirnot was awarded the prestigious
Best Actress Award for her performance as Star in the
production. Mary Burns, who plays Courtney, was named to
the FTC All-Star Cast. The play is about a teenage girl,
self-named Star, trying to cope with having cystic
fibrosis. Her favorite singer is John Lennon. The story
line is about two girls becoming best friends all the
while Star’s fatal disease keeps rearing its ugly head
at the most inopportune times. It is a humor filled show
with a sad surprise ending that leaves many of the
audience members in tears.
The show will go on to represent the state of Florida at
the South Eastern Theatre Conference held in Birmingham,
Alabama, next March. Additionally, two of Booker's
Technical Theatre students and 12 Acting Students
auditioned at the conference and garnered over 100
callbacks to prestigious colleges, universities and
conservatories from all over the country including New
York, Illinois, Texas, Georgia and, of course, Florida.
Candice Artim selected and directed the play, Ken
Weigers designed the set, Sheryl Weigers designed the
costumes and BHS senior Patrick Bedell designed the
lighting. The Cast members include: Kathryn Huxtable,
Richard Brandt, Meghan Manahan, Evan Glantz, Mike
Foster, Emily Ross, Sabine Jeanty, Kylie Fitch. Ensemble
includes Emily Hayes, Simone Curry, Zachary Hlavac,
Micah Crosby, Leo Chappell. |

Review of “A Persistent Peace: One Man’s Struggle for a Nonviolent World”
by John Dear SJ
Religion in the United States is and has been for some time at a condition
in which its very popularity is leading it into a sort of denouncement. The
multibillion dollar businesses of the televangelists and the ever growing
presence of mega churches have come with additional price tags of enmeshment
in far right wing politics. Conversely, Father John Dear of the Society of
Jesus (i.e. the Jesuits) stands in witness against the ever cheapening of
the basic message of Jesus of Nazareth. His new book, his autobiography,
tells of his process of grappling with and coming to live the peaceful story
of Jesus in his own life. And, he tells of how that personal struggle to
imitate Jesus led him into troubles with the institutional Roman Catholic
Church.
Something like Thomas Merton at Columbia University, John Dear, raised in a
reasonably well-to-do family, was a student at Duke University with little
real purpose or direction in his life. On one occasion a fellow student challenged him with the proposition that “if you really believe in Jesus
then nothing else really matters.” Those words seem to have touched the soul
of John Dear. From that point he set out to discover their meaning in the
framework of the Catholic Church and most especially in the Beatitudes of
Jesus. Some time later in Palestine, near the Sea of Galilee, Dear
challenged God to give him a sign that a life dedicated to living the
Beatitudes was God’s will for him. Dramatically, two Israeli jets appeared
out of the horizon, close to the ground and going faster than sound, they
flew directly over the spot where he stood going to their bombing mission
into Lebanon. Dear was convinced that was the answer to his challenge and so
he went on to his seminary studies with the Jesuits. Those seminary days
were not without trouble nor were (or are) his years in the priesthood. He
found that the cozy relationship of the Catholic hierarchy with the
political and economic powers of the world to be his nemesis as he walked
the path of the peaceful Jesus.
AAs a Jesuit, Dear came to know the poet and fellow Jesuit Dan Berrigan and
Dan’s brother and former priest, the peace activist Phil Berrigan. Dan seems
to have helped John to find a necessary inner peace and Phil showed him a
road to becoming a public peace activist. John Dear and Phil Berrigan spent
several months together in jail after being arrested during a Plowshares
peace action on a US Air Force base in North Carolina. That was just one of
many times Dear was in jail for trying to stop the US war machine.
Currently, Father Dear lives in Albuquerque, NM, a kind of clerical exile.
Dear had been expelled from the Jesuit province to which he had been
attached because of his activism in the cause of justice. He was assigned to
pastoral duties at four desert parishes. The people at one parish which was
made up mostly of retired military people asked the bishop to remove him.
The bishop acquiesced to the parishioners wishes. Ironically it was to the
desert that Jesus went to seek solitary peace.
Read this book. And, go to Father Dear’s talk
when he is here
in Sarasota. Call WSLR for details
about that event 941-894-6469. |

[ looking for creatives ]
Venice Magazine, a new glossy magazine to be launched
in February, is looking for talented writers, columnists and photographers.
All must be local — columnists must be Venice people in particular. Because
it’s a start-up, you’ll be asked to work for free (in exchange for byline/
photo credit and ad space in this gorgeous magazine) for your first two
issues, but by your third issue, the magazine intends to pay all freelancers
with whom it chooses to continue a working relationship — it may not be a
lot of pay at first, but it will be something. In particular, we would love
to have writers who can write feature profiles, environmental stories,
design stories, and stories about all the outdoor activities you can do in
Venice — fishing, golfing, boating, kayaking, biking, etc. For future photo
spreads, we would love to know the names of some art directors/ make-up
artists/ hair people willing to work on the same terms as set forth above.
