In Memoriam: Robert E. Atkins
April 19, 1944 – May 24, 2008

A Man Of Many Hats - And Just As Many Dreams
It’ll be strange not to hear his unmistakable booming
deep voice over the loudspeakers any more, or see him
coming out of the Asolo, or just helping out backstage
at the Players … last Saturday, Robert Atkins was
working in his garden when his heart stopped. He was
only 64 – far too young, of course, to leave behind his
wife Patty, his 84-year old mother Katherine, 3 sons, 6
daughters and 13 grandchildren. But friends of Robert
Atkins know that he’d understand why it happened the way
it did. He’d shoot them his wry smile, then follow up
with a quick quip for everyone in earshot.
A Vietnam War Veteran who worked for the BBC in England
after his military service, Robert returned to the
States to “multitask” for 13 years in Florida, among
other things as a DJ, voiceover specialist, Boys and
Girls Club mentor, baseball coach, radio show host and
actor on Sarasota stages. Theatre audiences at the
Historic Asolo recently saw him act in Mike Bennett’s
“The Boys Next Door”, but I think he’ll always be
remembered most for his performances as Hoke in “Driving
Miss Daisy” and Midge in “I’m Not Rappaport”. And of
course, as the voice of Audrey II in “Little Shop of
Horrors.”
Robert and Patty were married on the stage of The
Players Theatre, and it is there that Patty would like
to celebrate Robert’s life with a commemorative tribute
on Sunday, June 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
If you’d like to send a message of condolence, you can
mail Patty at

[ special film screening ]
Sarasota’s new Documentary Film Society (DFS) is
screening “Knuckleball,” by local producer and comedian
Ken Sons.
The screening is at 10:30 am on May 31st at the
Lakewood Ranch
Cinemas. Ken will be on hand after the 70 minute
screening for Q & A with the audience. A portion of the
proceeds will help the Documentary Film Society get
rolling. The DFS mission is to enhance the appreciation
of documentary films as both entertainment and as an
educational catalyst to increase awareness and promote
action. The DFS plans to produce a couple of
documentaries each year about a local non-profit or
cause. The production will be at no cost and provided
for those non-profits that can not otherwise afford the
expense. Sponsorship funding opportunities (Producer
Credit) exist for those who’d like to help their special
cause receive much deserved recognition.

I’ve seen them in airports for years but finally broke down last month and
bought my first The No.1
Ladies Detective Agency book. I wasn’t expecting much – a lightweight
mystery series set in Africa with a “cutesy” female detective – but boy, was
I surprised. They are now among my favorite books ever.
They recount the adventures of Precious Ramotswe, around 40, a clever,
ambitious, kind-hearted woman in Botswana who takes her inheritance of 180
cattle and opens a detective agency. First she hires a secretary, Mwa
Mukutsi, the top graduate of the Botswana Secretarial College. They wait for
business, occasionally shoe-ing out the chickens who wander in. Things are
slow at first but soon a whole stream of suspicious husbands, missing
persons and swindled employers are seeking them out.
Meanwhile, Precious –who was briefly and disastrously married to a jazz
trumpeter – is being courted by Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, a prosperous mechanic.
Will they ever tie the knot? The books are
actually much more about the characters’ personal lives, and the picture we
get of everyday life in a small town in Africa is fascinating. The most
thrilling moment: Mwa Mukutsi, who all her life
has been beaten out by the pretty girls, gets promoted to assistant
detective.
The series is written by Alexander McCall Smith, who might best be described
as the Mr. Chatterbox of Edinburgh, Scotland. He’s white and teaches law and
writes for the paper but he grew up in Africa and clearly loves it. You’ll
understand Africa much better after reading
this books but that’s not the point. They define what reading for pleasure
is all about. It’s that simple. (editor's note:
