Every Saturday

[ improv comedy ]

You can catch the antics of the FST Improv Troupe every Saturday in the Goldstein Cabaret. The doors open at 7:45 pm so that you can grab a seat and lubricate your laughing muscles. The show starts at 8:30 pm. You’ll laugh out loud and be surprised at what this gang of misfits can come up with without a script (that’s why they do improv, only 2 of the troupe can read). The cast includes Tim, the white African-American straight gay man; Andrew, so thin he has only one side; Angel, whose favorite color is orange; and some other funny people that will be pissed I didn’t mention their name. Ha ha! Call 941-366-9000 for tickets and information. Watch a couple of videos here and here.

Beginning July 12

[ brothers battle in true west ]

The Banyan Theater Company presents Sam Shepard's "True West" through August 3. Austin, a tidy screenwriter, is house-sitting for his mother while working on a screenplay. His brother Lee, a scruffy drunk, arrives. Lee is not there for house-sitting. No. Lee is there to steal from houses in his mother's neighborhood. Austin, knowing there is little he can do to stop Lee, requests that he be out of the house when a movie producer comes to visit. Seems like a simple request, right? At the Jane B. Cook Theatre, FSU Center for Performing Arts. Phone 941-552-1032 for tickets.
July 17 – 20
[ the devil, you say ]

The winner of the Players Theatre 2007 The Plays the Thing competition, “If the Devil Could Fall in Love” opens soon. The devil falls in love with a New York novelist and quickly blurs the line between right and wrong in this outrageous comedy. The play, written by Jenny Beres, is directed by Catherine Randazza and stars Julianne Randolph, Berry Ayers, Tommy Carpenter and Cliff Roles as God (I couldn’t decide between too many comebacks for Cliff playing God, so I’ll leave it alone)

The better question might be – what am I not reading? I’m notorious for having my nose stuck in several books and magazines at any given time.

I just finished the infamous article about Bill Clinton from the July issue of Vanity Fair magazine. Even though I’m no fan of Bill’s, I thought this article devolved from wanna-be steamy to boringly seamy. I say it’s a big don’t bother.

I’ve been torturing myself for almost two months with Kerouac’s On the Road -- for the most superficial reason of all – I thought it was a “should-read.”

But books are too precious for duty-reading.

Books are best friends, advisers, inspirers, conspirers, very nearly lovers sometimes as well, and they should never be something you have to force-feed yourself. If a book isn’t right for you at the time, put it down and pick it up again in a few years … it’s almost always just what you need that second time around. Guess I should take my own advice and send Jack on down the road without me.

I’m always reading Thoreau – mostly Walden, but return to Civil Disobedience at least once a year. Last night, I found myself re-reading these lines from Walden’s Conclusion, which given the economic times we’re living in, are more apropos than usual: “However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names.”

While writing my Reality Chick column for the Pelican Press for two years, I wouldn’t let myself read other columnists, but now I’m catching up big time. I just recently finished Art Buchwald’s I’ve Always Got Paris; Anna Quindlen’s Thinking Out Loud; and Nathan McCall’s Makes Me Wanna Holler and What’s Going On (these latter two are definite must-reads – not in the this-looks-good-on-a-bookshelf sense, but in the so-compelling-they’ll-blow-your-mind sense.)

Other than that, my most recent read was a book-club re-read of Martha Stout’s The Sociopath Next Door -- should be required reading for singletons in Sarasota, I think.

(Okay, c’mon … I’m joking … um, sort of.)

(Visit M.C.'s site)

Don’t forget that M.C. Coolidge will be at Sarasota News & Books on July 11 at 6:30 pm to discuss her book “Sideways in Sarasota.” Coolidge, a native Floridian and long-time Bostonian, has a unique style that has made her a favorite Sarasota columnist. Her insight and stories are poignant and often humorous. Read M.C.’s recent opinion piece that appeared in the Tampa Tribune on July 4 by clicking here. For more information call 941-365-6332.
July 18

[ florida studio theatre ]

Southern Comforts,” by Kathleen Clark, opens soon in the Keating Theatre of FST. About the play, “A late-in-life love story about a caustic old widower warmed back to life by a merry widow with a honeyed accent. Their funny, awkward, and enchanting romance is filled with sweet surprises and unpredictable tribulation. Told with warmth and perceptive humor, this Off-Broadway success is an affecting journey of compromise and rejuvenation, of personal risk and the rewards of change.” Call 941-366-9000 for tickets and info.

[ get ready for camp ]

The Studio@620, 620 First Avenue South in St. Pete, presents the Summer Camp Exhibit and Classic Film Series, a seriously frivolous exhibition celebrating the spirit of extravagance and all things Camp.
