Featured Artists
Marlene Rose

“When People first view my work, I'm often told they
feel a ‘certain aliveness’ inherent in the work itself.
My goal as an artist is to inject life into whatever I
make. In simple terms to make the piece come alive,”
says Marlene
Rose, a glass sculptor whose amazing artwork is on
display at the
Hodgell Gallery, in Sarasota, and the subject of a
documentary film entitled From Fire: An Odyssey of
Glass. The film, directed and produced by
Karen
Lavender, will be screened as part of the
Through
Women’s Eyes Film Festival at the Hollywood
20 February 1 and 2.
Marlene’s work is hand crafted from molten glass using
both found objects and new creations. “When I cast the
sculptures, I include in them relics of modern life,
interesting objects that have been cast away, industrial
waste items that seem to unite present and past. In the
end, the completed piece transcends the sensibility of
mere time.” Marlene’s father was also a sculptor and her
mum a painter, so her education and appreciation of art
started at her birth in NY. She continued her studies in
Connecticut, California and Washington and has traveled
extensively through South America, Europe, the Middle
East and Africa gaining further inspiration for other
cultures and foreign artisans.
Working with fire and 1000 degree molten glass is a
fiery intersection of art and science, as the materials
change consistency and color during the many phases it
passes from inspiration to creation. Check out Marlene’s
work here and be sure to go to the
Through
Women’s Eyes Film Festival to see process on
screen. (click

[ plays at asolo rep ]
Asolo Repertory Theatre presents
the United States premiere of The Blonde, the Brunette and
the Vengeful Redhead, a new,
hit play by Australian playwright Robert Hewett. This one-woman
tour de force performance explores multiple perspectives on
love, adultery, anger, greed, peace, and the power of
forgiveness. Humor and pathos are discovered as the play’s
central event, and its consequences are revealed by various
characters. The audience is forced to question if there is such
a thing as absolute truth or whether everything they think they
know as fact is really just a matter of perception. (This story
is excerpted from the press release provided by the Asolo Rep
and reproduced due to tired fingers and no more time) |

[ literature ]Pulitzer Prize-winning author
Geraldine
Brooks will open The Palm Literary Society’s 2008 series at
Michael’s On East at 11:30 am. Brooks’ new novel, People of the
Book, is “…an intricate, ambitious novel that traces the journey
of a rare illuminated Hebrew manuscript from convivencia Spain
to the ruins of Sarajevo, from the Silver Age of Venice to the
sunburned rock faces of northern Australia. Inspired by the true
story of a mysterious codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah,
People of the Book is a sweeping adventure through five
centuries of history. From its creation in Muslim-ruled,
medieval Spain, the illuminated manuscript makes a series of
perilous journeys: through Inquisition-era Venice, fin-de-siecle
Vienna, and the Nazi sacking of Sarajevo.” (from the author’s
