Linda Carson - AnythingArts.com Featured Artist

by Cliff Roles, radio host 1220 AM Talk Of The Sun Coast, columnist SCENE Magazine

On her 65th birthday, Linda Carson's gift to herself was to join the "Luffing Lassies", part of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, buy herself a 17' Pram sailing boat and learn how to sail. That was five years ago. Amazing as it is to believe, Linda turned 70 on July 11 this year.
She still sails a lot nowadays: "I capsized last week" she blushes. "Two men from the chase boat had to fish me out of the bay!" I visit Linda at her desk in Sarasota's ABC 7 studios on Tenth Street, where she's preparing the weekend news together with her producer Courtney. We chat as she proudly shows me photos of her four children and three grandchildren.

This past Monday, December 7, Linda made her way to her church to celebrate the life of her late husband Bud Carson, the acclaimed former football coach to whom she was married for 35 years. He passed away on that date in 2005. "I'm helping to send my two grandsons to college in Bud's name", she tells me. She's also formed the Bud Carson Memorial Scholarship, which awards $ 5,000 every year to a defensive High School football player who embodies "the backbone of the team". Three players have already received this scholarship.

It didn't escape anyone's notice 3 years ago when Linda put herself in the hands of Dr. Bill Anderson and succeeded in losing 73 pounds. "He would get me to sit in a chair and meditate," Linda recalls. She still sticks to the no-snacking rule, restricts herself to 800 calories a day, exercises at the YMCA three times a week and takes her dog Murphy, a 5-year old Collie, for brisk walks. Linda got him from Southeastern Guide Dogs three years ago. "He didn't quite make the grade as a guide dog", she remembers. "But he's a great companion, and I love him dearly."

Linda has spent more than 44 years in the field of television broadcasting, working as a weathercaster, anchor, sports reporter, and consumer reporter. She began her career in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, as a weathercaster at the ABC affiliate. She spent 10 years at that station and went on to become a reporter and weekday anchor. Linda joined ABC 7 in 1995 from WTFX-TX in Philadelphia, PA, where she worked as a freelance weather anchor and Co-Host of the award winning show, "Job Exchange", and Guest Host of the sports feature "Eagles Day Live Show."

Memorable episodes in her career?
"Definitely my coverage of Coretta Scott King, the widow of slain Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Atlanta during the nation-shattering moments following his assassination. I was at WXIA-TV, getting ready to anchor the 11 pm news on the night it happened; we followed the Mayor to Coretta's house and waited outside while he told her what had happened. We saw the world change before our eyes when the leader of peaceful change was gone, and riots broke out all around the county."

Linda was present on October 25, 2006 when "Gainesville Ripper" Danny Rolling was executed by lethal injection in the Florida State Prison in Starke near Gainesville. He had been convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of five people in 1989/90. "His signature was to arrange the bodies in such a way as to highlight the carnage in the rooms, even including setting up several mirrors and decapitating or posing his victims." Linda interviewed Rolling on Death Row.
"The most shocking thing was… (click here to read the rest of the story)

My Rock Star Life, by Annette Breazeale

What an amazing ten days I’ve had. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I got a call from the Kelly Fores, the local Manatee Commissioner from the Fla. Film Commission who knew me from the work I did with the Banyan Theater Company this summer. She asked if I would be interested in doing props for a music video that was filming locally. The video is for the band “Shinedown” and the song is “Second Chance”. As this whole thing began to unfold I found that the production company, The Collaboration Factory, is from Los Angeles and the group is BIG STUFF, on Atlantic Records. They had chosen Anna Maria Island, a quaint fishing village just north of Sarasota because the producer Thom Fennesy’s parents have retired here and he had been here for his Dad’s 80th birthday and fell in love with the locale. I called my dear friend Elizabeth Shannon in New Orleans (my son Scott’s Godmother) who has been doing props and Art Direction for films for many years and after hours on the phone with her teaching me the basics of working props and art for films I thought I just might be able to do this. Following a couple of calls to L.A. with Thom, sending of resumes etc., I had a conference call with Thom and the Director Ryan Smith and they decided that they loved my way of communicating and asked me to be Art Director! Little ole me?
So….. they sent me the “treatment”, an outline of the story and a general idea of what Ryan wanted as “the look” and there was no turning back. Thom, Ryan and the Production Supervisor, Napoleon Oscoa arrived Sunday and came and picked me up on a windy, rainy Sunday and we went off location scouting. I got along with everyone right off the bat and we had a great day checking out beaches and houses and fishing and bait shops, etc. I got my budget and I was off running like hell. We film on Wed and Thurs!!!!

So, I got my team together. Five people with a variety of wonderful skills and varying degrees of experience in film. I borrowed my ex husband Roger’s big old van and rented a huge box truck from friends and started scrambling to create the “worlds” the director needed. (READ THE REST, SEE PHTOTOS)

[ something fishy ]

Stop by the Edfish Gallery anytime, but on Sunday from 1 – 4:00 pm you can meet artist Capt. Jim Roberts. Roberts has transposed his love for the sport (fishing) into beautiful art in a traditional Japanese printmaking technique called gyotaku. (the following from Wikipedia) “There are two methods used in gyotaku. The direct approach is similar to block printing or linocut. In order to make a gyotaku print, one places the subject (e.g. fish, crab, scallop shell) on a flat surface and paints one side with sumi ink. Modern gyotaku artists often substitute watercolor, India ink or other painting material for the traditional sumi.” The Edfish Gallery is located at 3615 Webber Street in Sarasota. Call 941-706-2659 for information.

Spend the holidays with all your favorite citizens of Tuna and meet some new ones too. This time, it's 24 hours before Christmas and all-comic hell is about to break loose as these delightfully eccentric characters attempt to cope with seasonal traumas such as a disaster-prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol and a yard-decorating contest that is being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom. Bring the whole family and join in the holiday fun. (story copied from AnythingArts.com events calendar)
December 17 – 30
[ exhibit ]

At the Katherine Butler Gallery in Towles Court: This exhibition features two veteran gallery artists, watercolorist Ellen Kaiden and jeweler Sharyn Wolf. Ellen Kaiden is drawn to watercolor as a medium because it is spontaneous and uncontrollable. Her paintings are full of life and movement; they have an architectural but vitreous quality. Sharyn Wolf’s childhood love of rock and bone turned into an adult curiosity in crafting these materials into a wearable art form. An additional love of African art propelled her into the world of beads; how they were made, who made them, how they designated status, how they have been treasured through time. (artwork shown by Ellen Kaiden)

The film garnered 25 festival honors around the country, including eight “Best Documentary” and seven “Audience Favorite” awards. Rustin spent over sixty years as an activist for civil rights and, though he played an integral part, was forced to stay in the background because he was openly homosexual. Thus, he became the “Brother Outsider.” The film screening is free as part of the Art Center Sarasota’s outreach program. A $5 donation is appreciated. The event is co-sponsored by AnythingArts.com and MelEcho Productions. Call 941-365-2032 for information.

[ last minute shopping ]

Don’t mis-underestimate (couldn’t resist a Bush-ism) the power of the arts as a present for any occasion! Now, in the last days before the big present giving days of Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza and Festivas (the holiday for “the rest-of-us”), remember that there are galleries and shops all over the place, including Sarasota’s Towles Court (Art Walk December 19 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm) and the Village of the Arts, in Bradenton, that survive on sales made during this time of year. We all recognize the arts as one of the most important benefits of living here. Help support your local artist, arts organization or gallery/shop by buying locally and spreading the cheer. Merry Everything from AnythingArts.com!! (oh, I couldn’t list every place so when I said “all over the place” that included Palm Ave., Main St., St. Armands, theatres, galleries, restaurants, hotdog stands and anything else I can include to avoid emails saying I forgot something. Be Merry!)
