Featured Artist
George Carlin
May 12, 1937 - June 22. 2008

This week we have decided to pay tribute to George Carlin. His topical humor and wit made the most usual and everyday things hilarious. Simple words lost their meaning or tested freedom of speech to the point of lawsuits and arrests. (If you are up for it, hear the "Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV" by clicking here. ** warning: the title should let you know it is "dirty").

Carlin was conceived at Curley's Hotel, Rockaway Beach, NY and was raised and semi-educated in NYC. In 1954, Carlin joined the Air Force and, according to his website, received three court-martials and numerous other punishments called Article Fifteens. He became a DJ at an off base radio station in Shreveport, LA. After an honorable discharge (I assume he was speaking of the Air Force), he headed to Boston for another radio gig only to be fired when he used the mobile news van to drive to NYC to buy pot. So, on to Fort Worth, Texas and KXOL where he met fellow future comedian Jack Burns (later of Burns & Schreiber). Together they escaped Texas and headed for Hollywood as Burns & Carlin and started doing the stand-up route. Carlin's first television appearance with Burns was on the Tonight Show with Jack Parr on October 10, 1960. The comedy pair amicably parted ways not long after and George went on to fame, fortune, arrests and to become a household name. That's the two paragraph version, read the rest on his website. Meanwhile, check out a favorite routine about "Stuff" by clicking the photo above and here for Hippy Dippy Weatherman.

See you George, and thanks for all the fish.

Being asked to write this little essay made me face some facts. I have a lot of books! Not that I hadn’t noticed before, but my office bookshelves are home to about 600 tomes with another 300 or so in the second bedroom (not to mention the legions stashed in closets and drawers.)

These aren’t just books I’ve been too lazy to take to the used book store. They represent years of accumulated wisdom, wit and pleasure that I return to again and again. And they are an eclectic bunch that’s for sure—kind of like my dual-career life as a public relations/marketing practitioner and coach.

Currently, I’m re-reading The Soul’s Code by James Hillman. I was inspired to pick it up again after about a decade because a young friend wants to talk about it. I like Hillman’s notion that we come into this life with a unique “daimon” – our passion or raison d’être – and our task is to bring that unique expression into the world as fully as possible.

I also love children’s books, and I’m reading the final Harry Potter book again. I enjoy Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, the classic Madeleine L’Engle and The Golden Compass series when I want to indulge my inner child.

Cultivating a creative life is one of my passions, and I am constantly perusing Julia Cameron’s classic The Artist’s Way and her other books. As a writer, I’m drawn to her Right to Write, but my favorite is Stephen King’s On Writing. My fondest wish is to tell him that I have recommended it to many aspiring writers, and it has helped a number of people I know (including me.) King’s open-handed generosity in sharing one of his first drafts is a confidence booster for self-critical writers, and aren’t we all?

A big chunk of my reading time these days has been devoted to keeping up with the ever-evolving Web 2.0 as public relations and marketing are moving that direction faster than developers used to snap up Sarasota waterfront.
