Featured Artist
Carole Kleinberg

Carole Kleinberg is well known in the area for her
passion for and participation in theatre of many forms,
from the educational aspects to directing. Before moving
to Florida, Carole was a theatre professor at Oakton
Community College on Chicago’s north shore. Once in the
Sunshine State, she was the education director for the
Asolo Repertory Theatre: she managed the Access to the
Arts program which brought school kids to plays; taught
theatre classes; and co-produced the Kaleidoscope
Musical Theatre Workshop, a summer camp for teens and
adults with developmental disabilities. (Editor’s note:
If you’ve never seen a Kaleidoscope production, you
must. You will laugh, cry, and be on your feet cheering
at the end of the show.) Carole has directed over 70
plays, including award-winning productions of The
Diary of Anne Frank and The Elephant Man.
Local audiences might recall her productions of I
Never Saw Another Butterfly and The World of
Sholom Aleichem at
The Players of
Sarasota, Crossing Delancey at the Sarasota
Jewish Theatre and the Lemon Bay Playhouse, and
Mixed Emotions at the
Island Players. Carole conceived and directed the
original staged readings Movies that Changed My Life
and Uncommon Woman: A Tribute to Wendy Wasserstein
with the Women’s Theatre Collaborative. She directed
Private High, a substance abuse prevention play that’s
performed for local high schools; and she was involved
in the Sarasota Actors Workshop. Never lacking ideas,
energy or enthusiasm, Carole is currently settling into
her new position as the
Banyan Theater Company’s
artistic director while she works on the final touches
as director for the Island Players upcoming production
of The Long Weekend (see articles below for
more information on each).
