Featured Artist
Jeffery Kin

Jeff Kin seems to need very little sleep. He is involved
in so many different things that having him as our
Featured Artist was an easy decision. Jeff is the
Artistic Director at
The
Players Theatre, no small undertaking for a
community theatre that produces 30 shows per year,
engaging over 700 volunteer actors , ushers, and crew
members with a total audience that exceeds 65,000 per
year. As Artistic Director, he also oversees the
educational component of the theatre, The Players
Performing Arts Studio, and sets the tone for the more
than 57 classes offered and a cadre of students, kids
through adults, topping 300.
Jeff has been preparing for this job for a long time,
whether he knew it or not. He’s been seen on local
stages for years in productions like “NINE” and “The
Legend of Yin and Yang” at the Players, “Sweet Charity”
and “A Chorus Line” at
The Golden Apple
and “Amadeus” at
The Manatee Players. Jeff served as the Artistic
Director of
Sarasota Actors Workshop for two seasons and has
directed at many regional venues. Not only has he been
the coordinator of “The Plays the Thing”, for several
years preceding his current position, he penned the
winning play a few years back; “Anna, Leona & The Lady
Luck.” The play went on to be produced throughout the
country. He has taught acting and playwriting at The
Players, The Asolo
and independently. His play, “Always A Part of Me” was
produced at the
Backlot in 2007.
Jeff was an original Board member of
Theatre Odyssey
and is the founder of the
Eclectic Theatre Company, or “etc”. With “etc”, Jeff
created “Got A Minute” a production of sixty 60-second
plays that has raised more than $30,000 for cancer
research and causes.
Playwright, actor, director, teacher, coach, Artistic
Director; need we say more. Kudos Jeff, for all that you
do. (click

through the Maske household as Louise begins to discover just how resourceful
she is capable of being. Based on a 1911 one-act play by the German playwright.

Along with other member of the
James Joyce Society,
I'm reading Dubliners
by The Master. I first read it in undergrad school but it eluded me (as did
most things in those days, including co-eds). But I've read it a couple of
times over the years and I've read the concluding story, "The Dead" a few
times. Better critics than I have called it the greatest short story ever
written and if the standard is a deeper revelation each time through then
they're probably right. When the work was musicalized a few years back I
viewed it as a form of genuine heresy. Ditto, the film. In fact, they're
both pretty interesting interpretations. But you don't mess with JJ. I vowed
to read Finnegan's Wake before I passed on and I'm set to slog my way into
it thus assuring myself a substantial remaining time on earth.
I'm finishing up Rediscovering Jacob Riis (New Press) by friend and
collaborator, Daniel Czitrom and Bonnie Yochelson. It's a revisionist
history of the famed photographer-journalist and author of the
groundbreaking, How The Other Half Lives. Also, Volcanic Jesus by Lee
Jacobus (Hammonasset House Books), a series of Hawaiian tales exploring the
erosion of the native culture as Americanization permeates.
Jack Gilhooley's play The Warrior -- produced last year at BacklotArts --
goes to the D.C. Fringe Festival in July and the NYC Fringe Festival in
August, produced by Theatre of The First Amendment in VA and Catholic U
Theatre Department. He's a double NEA winner, an alum of New Dramatists, a
Shubert, O'Neill Conference, NYFTA, Canada Council and double Fulbright
awardee (Spain and Ireland). He has received four grants from the Florida
Arts Council (two Individual Artist and two Enhancement) and was the first
winner of the Sarasota County Arts Council's John Ringling Fund's Artist
Fellowship. His Plays By Jack Gilhooley has been issued by the prestigious
Broadway Play Publishing, Inc. (Mamet, LaBute, Kushner, etc.) He is trying
to get his two-character "play with songs", Champagne Jimmy And The Ingenue'
produced at the Historic Asolo since a crucial scene takes place on the
actual Asolo stage in Italy in 1932. The play is about the beloved rogue
mayor of New York, Jimmy Walker and his showgirl-mistress, Betty Compton.
Prominent in the scenario is their relationship with John Ringling and their
tumultuous time spent in Sarasota. Inquiries invited:
email Jack.
