Donald
Friedman

Donald Friedman, author of the critically praised
The Writer’s Brush, Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture
by Writers, and curator of the recent New York
exhibition of writer-art that The New Yorker magazine
called “…a delicious peek into the artistic pursuits of
writers,” will speak at New College Foundation Hot Topic
seminar December 5.
Mr. Friedman spent decades in research, locating the
artwork of 200 of the world’s most famous writers,
gathering images from several continents, unearthing
paintings and drawings from contemporary writers, and
the estates of those deceased, from private collections,
museums, libraries, and universities, as well as
photographing the works and securing reproducing rights.
In addition to their art, Mr. Friedman investigated the
biographies of the writers for little known details of
their lives in the visual arts, and dug through their
essays, correspondence, and diaries to discover their
insights into their double gifts, and their thoughts
about the nature of word and image. He interviewed such
notable writer-artists as Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Wolfe, John
Berger, Donald Justice, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Derek
Walcott, and many others.
The result is a book that presents in over 400 images, a
range of writer-art from the beautiful landscapes that
Hermann Hesse credited with saving his life, to the
manuscript sketches that Fyodor Dostoevsky made of his
characters, to the can-can dancers secretly drawn by
Joseph Conrad, and grants its readers new insights into
the lives and minds of their favorite writers and the
nature of the creative process itself. Honored by
starred reviews from both Publisher’s Weekly and
Booklist (Journal of the American Libraries Association)
that called it “a grand feat of research and
interpretation,” The Writer’s Brush is a Hot Type
Recommendation of Vanity Fair, the subject of a
forthcoming segment on CBS Sunday Morning, is a main
selection of The Book-of-the-Month Club and Reader’s
Subscription, and has been included in The New York
Times Sunday Book Review holiday gift guide. [
Friedman is a winter resident of Sarasota and a
supporter of the arts.
AnythingArts.com
is proud to co-sponsor this event and, therefore, the
details are worth repeating: Donald Friedman will be at
New College’s Sainer Pavilion Wednesday
December 5 at 4 pm, reception to follow, to discuss The
Writer’s Brush. Call 941-487-4800 for tickets and
