Featured Event
The Sarasota Reading Festival

The Sarasota Reading Festival is celebrating its 10th annual free, daylong celebration of the joys of reading, to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Five Points Park, in downtown Sarasota. More than 75 author readings and panel discussions, children's events and performances are planned for this 10th anniversary reading festival. Among participating authors will be award-winning CNN anchor Lou Dobbs (click here for tickets to Lou Dobbs), actor and comedian Gene Wilder and best-selling novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford. Dobbs will kick off the national tour for his new book, Independents Day: Awakening the American Spirit, at the Reading Festival. He is presented in partnership with Forum: Truth for a Change, and Independents Day must be purchased at the Reading Festival in order to attend his speech. Among the special events will be a group panel discussion on the "The Media's Role in our Democratic Society," which will include Atlanta Journal-Constitution managing editor, Hank Klibanoff, co-author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation; Alexis Simendinger, White House correspondent for the National Journal; and Herald-Tribune executive editor, Mike Connelly. Dr. Gordon E. "Mike" Michalson Jr., president of New College of Florida, will moderate the panel discussion, which will be presented in partnership with the Florida Humanities Council through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Nationally renowned author and Sarasota resident, Stuart Kaminsky also will moderate a panel of mystery writers.

In addition, over 5,000 free books will be distributed to children and young adults under 18 before and during the festival, thanks to a grant from the Comcast Foundation. Because the Sarasota Opera House continues to be closed for renovations in November, author talks will take place in First United Methodist Church on Pineapple Avenue and State Street and at various pavilions throughout the Five Points area. Renowned cookbook authors, including Earl Bubba Hiers and George Stella of The Food Network, will demonstrate their recipes in the Jack Geldbart Auditorium at Selby Library. Come and enjoy this annual celebration of reading!
