Betty Fairbank Griggs

Betty studied at the School of Fine Arts of Yale University. Prior to moving to Sarasota in 2002, Betty lived in Puerto Rico for many years. Now she divides her time between Sarasota and Verbier, Switzerland. The love of travel and exotic places is evident in Betty’s paintings, many of which are series based on specific locations throughout the world. March 23
[ not your average high school theatre ]

Sarasota's premiere high school improv troupe, SHS's Improv Underground, will be performing Friday, March 23 at 7:00 pm in the band room at Sarasota High School. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the door. Leave pretense at the door and laugh along as this talented troupe of teens under the direction of Zac Chase of FST Improv builds scenes based wholly on audience suggestions.

March 24

The Manatee Players’ teen acting troupe, “Show Kidz”, will present a free performance at the Manatee Players Riverfront Theatre on Saturday.  The performance will begin at 2:00 pm with no reservations needed.  The show will include a variety of acting and musical numbers.  “Show Kidz” is directed by Diana Shoemaker and are available to entertain at functions in the Bradenton area by calling the Manatee Players at 941-748-0111.

Enjoy the work of three landscape artists at Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art, downtown near Burns Court. Heidi Edwards (work shown at right), Bruce Marsh and William Nichols are hanging now and worth the visit.

March 26

Artist Daphne Cummings is creating a special art installation project and you can help from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. Daphne is going to cover the entire southern and eastern sides of the Hermitage’s Bach Cottage with FALLEN seagrape leaves.  That’s where you come in; she needs lots of fallen leaves and help sticking them to the building. When finished applying the leaves, she will photograph the artistic result. Call 941-475-2098 for more information. (kids can help if accompanied by an adult)

[ bug ]

The "Best Play You've Never Seen" series continues at the Backlot at 7:30 pm with a staged reading of "BUG" by Tracy Letts. Set in a seedy Oklahoma City motel room, this cutting edge play centers on the meeting between Agnes, a divorced waitress with a cocaine habit, and Peter, a Gulf War drifter introduced to her by her lesbian friend, R.C. ** not for kids or prissy people!! Doors open at 7:00 pm. The show is FREE (donations appreciated and suggested).

[ blue movie ]

The Blue Madonna, Two Monks with a Shovel is a 40-minute movie, named after a painting at the Ringling Museum, written by George Harborak and filmed in Sarasota. You can see the film daily, on a continuous loop, through the window of the Peter Paul Gallery on Palm Avenue. The film is also shown inside on a large screen at 3 PM every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre presents McCurdy’s All Stars Comedy Show. The show features both headliners and up-and-coming comedians who make their homes in Florida. (all 7:30 pm shows on Thursdays and Sundays at McCurdy’s are always smoke free! (That’s non-smoking, not free cigarettes!)

The Pepper Tree: A Literary Magazine hosts A Lunch & Learn Authors Roundtable at Michael’s On East from 10:00 - 3:00 pm.  The workshop, which includes lunch, will include authors speaking on various topics. Seats are expected to fill quickly, so call 941-922-2662 for further information.
